1974 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000

The Good. Bad. and the Ugly!

We love Alfa Romeo's. and we really love GTV's. light. quick. dashingly good looking. and absolutely a blast to drive. GTV ownership should be on the bucket list of any auto enthusiast. Although almost 40 years old. the styling is still striking and in my opinion. has one of the best front end treatments in the automobile universe.

I was smitten enough with it's clean. sexy shape. that I used this very car in an advertisement for a local Italian Espresso Bar.

Good

It's classic Italian. you will never tire of it's irresistible good looks and charm. It runs like an absolute champ. starts right away hot or cold. idles nicely and doesn't appear to be consuming oil or water. The gearbox is great. syncros do not grind. and it is the best shifting GTV's I have driven in a very long time. It tracks true whilst driving and stops properly and straight. The headlights. tachometer. temperature gauge. tail lights and brake lights function as intended.

It looks positively stunning from a bit of a distance. the paint is shiny. the trim is bright and the front grill and headlights in particular are in very good shape.

The interior is in decent condition. dash is good. headliner is good and the upholstery is free from any rips and tears.

                                                Bad

It's classic Italian. it will require fettling and regular upkeep. It looks much better at ten feet than ten inches. it's been repainted at some point in the last few years and the paint and bodywork are so-so. There is some electrical sorting to do (big surprise). the turn signals. hazards. horn and wipers are all in need of attention.

Many of the little switches and levers in the cockpit are in marginal condition and should be addressed. The Speedometer is neurotic. rarely indicating over 30 mph. regardless of actual forward progress and the gas gauge is perpetually on E.   The outside drivers door handle takes finesse. involving words most wouldn't use in front of your children.

There is a bit of an exhaust leak about halfway down the exhaust plumbing. this causes some lovely backfires on the overrun. which I love. but you may not find as charming.

The Ugly

Oxidation of iron metal.

Of course there is rust! These are after all. made from a special mixture of Powdered Rust. Pesto. Grappa and Mozzarella.

At some point in this car past there were rust issues. although not nearly as bad as we have seen at times. there are still some issues.   The floor has some patches. but is really salvageable.   Over all.  the underside isn't too bad for one of these GTV's.

We don't know who painted the car. how much body filler has been used. and how extensive the rust might have been. There is evidence that whoever did the prior bodywork may have cut corners. The rear bumper for instance is cleverly retained via threaded rod; please see the pictures for details.

In Closing

Long story short. we are trying to be as honest and forthcoming as possible. We have some receipts for mechanical work. but not for paint and bodywork.

The car drives great. looks good from a few feet away and has charisma for miles. It would make a great weekend driver and can be enjoyed with a small amount of sorting. It is not however. a show car and it does have some issues that will need to be addressed. If you have any doubt and are not a local bidder. we urge you to hire and inspection service so that you know exactly what you are getting into.
