Pontiac Fiero GT AKA Poor MAN

I purchased this GM Fiero GT earlier in the year . They were voted the second safest car in the US market for this model year. ( Volvo beat em ). The Fiero project was General Motor's one and only ever production mid engined sports coupe range manufactured from 1984. to 1988. They are/were a full galvanized space frame mid engine rear wheel drive exotic-car design / configeration. All panels are non structural/non load bearing and are glued / bonded onto the space frame ( see wikipedia ).

The panels are made from a composite non metalic material known as 'SMC' that does not ''ding'' due to 'memory' resilience. The first 2. 5 L 4 cyl series ( which were R&D'd with alloy V 8's) were featured as

Indianapolis 500 pace cars for 1984. chosen over the Corvette. They were nick named the poor man's Ferrari in their day.

Many have been used over the years as donor space frames for high powered Kit car Ferrari / Lambo / Maserati bodied immitation/apparition cars. This particular vehicle. until quite recently. had been laid up in a storage facility here in Melbourne ( for about a decade. after the prestige limo service that imported it in the mid 90's and had it RHD complied for big $$$ was closed down).

The brake and ignition systems had gone to sleep in storage & needed replacing. All parts are/were readily available from the USA and are very cheap. New brake calipers. new brake pads. new electronic distributor new ICU . new ignition coil. new windscreen washer pump. and a new battery have been fitted.

New master cyls . additional new ICU's. immersible fuel pump & filter. O 2 sensor. Coolant temp sensor. rad hoses and accessory belts were obtained in anticipation but not required.

Fuel system flushed. Hydraulic system flushed . Trans fluid changed. cooling system checked. engine serviced and given nulon E 30 teflon treatment.

These tough little iron horse Buick short stroke V 6 EFI engines are durable. bullet proof mills ( rev limited at 6500 rpm) & use the same oil filter as ecotec Holden V 6. The Larger Holden V 6 units fit up with very little fuss. as do LS 1 V 8's
. Chevy LS 1 V 8 conversions are considered the best power upgrade as Pontiac did much R&D testing in Alloy 4. 9 Litre V 8 format. which meant the engine compartment was designed large enough for V 8 options but. never eventuated during production years. This Fiero GT has 'as new' compression & oil pressure. handles like an F 1 go Kart in the corners c/o the GT optioned WS 6 suspension. and returns 35 miles per gallon on 91 RON unleaded at Legal Hwy cruising speed. but is capable of 200+KPH. The fuel tank is the larger 12 US gallon option fitted to the final 87/88 production year models. The odometer shows 82. 00 miles. which is about 131. 00 km. The car has not been lowered. and comes in at 43 inches high. With a little bit of suspension tweeking I see no reason why it could not be lowered to Ford GT 40 sorta specs.

A spare 5 th alloy wheel & tyre is also included. Primary reason for sale is due to my son surprising me a coupla weeks ago by allowing me to buy his Series 3 12 A Turbo super rare RX 7 . and ostensibly . we are a 12 a 13 b & super bike sorta family :) :)
The paint work needs a few touch ups from storage blems. and the stainless steel extractor / exhaust system has a noisey gasket that needs tightening or replacing.

Priced for a quick sale.

I may consider a veteran/vintage flat tank girder bike in some form of contra deal. Car has electric windows. electric mirrors. tilt adjustable steering wheel. cruise control. intermittent wiper controls. air conditioning. original digital AM/FM cassette quadrophonic sound system. and remote alarm / immobilizer system.

Fast becoming a collectable and appreciating cult car in the USA.

The current sale price in this soft market realistically represents less than 1/4 of the RHD conversion cost at today's RHD conversion quotes/prices. if you were to consider importing a clean left hooker from across the pond ( for what would be a similar amount to the price that I will sell this Historic rego plated weekend RHD yanky toy for. )

The car is advertized on a coupla other sites also for the same amount of bags of sand. .
