Chevrolet inadvertently hinted at the potency of 1966's high performance big block. (the first year for the L72 Turbojet 427 cubic inch V8) when it was initially announced as having 450hp. then inexplicably revised to 425hp shortly after its introduction. In the thick of the “horsepower wars” it was almost unthinkable for Chevy to back down during the model year. It was a time of intense rivalries and such announcements were invariably up. not down. The L72. in fact. differed in no way whatsoever from the engine Chevrolet rated at 450hp. except in advertising.
The 1966 L72 427/425 was. in truth. a fire-breathing behemoth. developed from a series of special engines Zora Arkus-Duntov and his performance-oriented Corvette team had cobbled together for field testing while waiting for Corvette's brakes to catch up with the prodigious power and torque delivered by ever larger. better breathing V8s.  
The L72 option would included four bolt mains. impact extruded aluminum pistons. a very aggressive camshaft. a four-barrel Holley 780 CFM carburetor mated to an aluminum intake and a free-flowing exhaust. Additionally. the K66 transistorized ignition was a mandatory option with the L72.  Stopping had finally been addressed the year before with the long-awaited advent of four-wheel disc brakes. Now Corvette had the stopping power to match its acceleration. which made it possible to put 400+ horsepower under the hood.

The stunning 1966 Corvette Sting Ray Coupe pictured here in Laguna Blue with a Bright Blue interior is factory built with the “Big Block" Turbojet 427/425 L72 option.  It was judged 97 Points and verified as Numbers Matching at a 2007 Regional NCRS competition in Bergen. CT. Corvette guru Al Grenning has also inspected the car and it passed his scrutineering with flying colors.  
Chassis number 194376S108991 was completed on 12/20/1965 and delivered to dealer 755 in zone 16. TPL Chevrolet of Clinton. NC. The Protect-O-Plate is made out to Mr. Anthony Fairchild of Los Angeles. California. Other documented owners are Mr. Ronald Louis Recker of Sacramento (circa 1971). California; Mr. Lee C. Beaumont IV of Grants Pass. Oregon (circa 1998); and Mr. Ronald Bonifacio of Shelton. Connecticut. The present owner is a private collector in Canada. who bought it via “The Classic Car Gallery” in Southport. CT in 2014.
With 45. 82 miles. believed actual. this documented five-owner car is accessorized with the L72 V-8. as well as the four-speed manual transmission. 4. 11 rear axle. F40 suspension. side exhaust. vacuum power disc brakes. transistor ignition. AM/FM radio. clock. black floor mats. side exhaust. It also comes with original keys and spares (and key codes). Original Protect-O-Plate. tools and jack. original owners manual. and all five original cast aluminum Kelsey-Hayes knock-off wheels. with eye-catching lighyt blue stripe tires—a nice combination for fun. very fast driving. A very correct older restoration to “better than new” standards. it shows excellent attention to detail and authenticity throughout.  
The recipient of an older ground up restoration. the condition of the Corvette is still remarkable both visually and mechanically. It has knock off wheels. an original AM/FM radio in the dash. a teak steering wheel. lap seat belts. heavy duty suspension. 4. 11 rear end and side mounted exhausts. This Corvette is ready for the road or for show and would be a fantastic car for any serious Corvette enthusiast.
