1961 Chrysler Newport “Continental Style” Convertible

Last of the Virgil Exner Designed “Big Fins

Mardi Gras Red & White Comfort Weave Interior

under 20. 00 miles… rare original condition survivor

This is a very rare 1961 Chrysler Newport Convertible…. the very last of the Exner Designed “BIG FINS” cars. There were a total production of 2. 65 of these convertibles made in 1961. There are now less than 50 remaining. It is estimated that less that 20% of the convertibles opted for and were produced with the more expensive “IMPERIAL” continental trunk. raised spare tire option.  This continental option was copy of the trunk design available on the Imperial and as an option on the Chrysler 300 letter series. There are several sites which estimate only 46 of these convertibles are now accounted for. and that only a handful of those with the rare continental trunk option are actually known to exist. It is believed that this car is an actual 1 of about 10 or so remaining with the “continental” or “Imperial” trunk  option. This loaded red & white example is also the most sought after of all color combinations produced in 1961.

This original & low mileage car is the stunning bright Mardi Gras Red with white basket weave interior. It has not been molested or fully restored. It still has the original faded dealer sticker on the rear trunk panel of the car. It comes with the family history. and mileage statement. In addition to the Imperial trunk option. it has the radio & clock options. seat belts. etc.  a loaded out car for 1961. The chrome is shiny & bright and without pitting… the glass all excellent… the interior looks like new. It starts. runs strong and drives nicely. The push-button automatic shifts nicely through the gears. A rare car in original condition with original paint… a true investment quality vehicle.

OWNERSHIP HISTORY & MILEAGE STATEMENT:

This car has been in one family since about 1983. Prior to that it was owned by a gentleman named Arthur Strong. a noted small town judge.    It is believed that he was the original owner.   The present owner obtained it from his father in about 12 years ago. The car has always been kept in a heated garage and driven very little. mostly sunny summer days. Clear title and owners actual history & mileage statement included.

MECHANICAL & CONDITION: I have been told the car has had recent full brakes and battery.

The car has been recently tuned with new plugs & wires. fresh oil & filter change.

Tires were replaced several years ago. with low miles on them.

The paint is original. with some vintage fading & wear and minor touch ups. but overall very shiny and impressive for original paint.  As noted the glass and chrome are amazing… no pitting & shiny bright work on the car. SEE PHOTOS! There is a small dent in the rear bumper that you may note in photos. I noted overall the body as extremely straight and solid … the photos should speak for themselves. This car has spent most of its life sitting in a heated garage. so it does need freshening up. I have only had the car briefly and for photos so I have noted only what I know or have been told. At present the power top does not work. I was told electrical power had been traced to the switch. and a new top switch is needed. Vintage Chrysler switches are available online at $100- or so. There is an older photo provided with top up to show what it looks like. This car was always garaged with top down to be used on sunny days only as a convertible.  This Newport still sports the original shiny& like new factory hubcaps… and it is interesting that the continental style spare trunk. raised spare tire option. uses an actual 5th hubcap set into it. This car is not perfect and not a fully restored #1 show car. but do look at photos and you will see that this rare car is in amazing condition overall.

We anticipate lots of activity based upon rarity of this investment vehicle. Hagarty and other sites give the standard rare convertible an "average" sales price range of $34K to $42K with some recent sales much higher depending upon color and options and auction sites you view. This is not an average vehicle. it is one of the very rare Imperial Trunk optioned Newport Convertibles. loaded out in red & white with low miles. It is priced with buy it now at the very low end of the fair estimated value ranges we have been given. but owners are also open to review all reasonable offers!
