'Some cars don't change. they just get better. The Mercedes-Benz 280SL. latest version of a line that began as the 230SL in 1963. is the same as ever. just better. enthused Road & Track after testing a 280SL in 1968. concluding: 'For those who value engineering finesse and high quality construction. it's alone in the field. '
The encore to the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL and 300 SL. codenamed W113. was first introduced at the 1963 Frankfurt Auto Show as the 230 SL. This new car was neither the race-bred machine exemplified by the 300 SL nor the boulevard tourer of the 190 SL. as it placed more of an emphasis on safety and comfort. The four-cylinder power of the 190 was gone. as all models were fitted with a Bosch fuel-injected. 2. 81-cubic centimeter six-cylinder that could produce 150 horsepower. It also had the added distinction of being the first Mercedes-Benz automobile to be fitted with an alternator as standard equipment. Off-the-shelf components included independent front and rear suspension and servo-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes. helping to keep development and production costs within reason.
Perhaps most appealing about the car was its unique styling. which was clearly linked to earlier Stuttgart designs. as it featured the broad front grille of the 300 SL. albeit in a squared-up shape. As with its predecessors. it was available as a roadster. coupe/roadster. and pure coupe. Most distinctive was its roofline: the so-called “pagoda” roof. which had been designed by Paul Bracq and Bela Barenyi. The upright roofline contained lots of glass area. with raised sides and a lower center panel. à la a Japanese pagoda.
Production of 230 SLs continued until the uprated 250 SL made its debut at the 1967 Geneva Show. Although horsepower ratings remained the same. the new 2. 96-cubic centimeter engine provided more torque for better acceleration. Its wheel rims were increased from 5. 5 to 6 inches. and four-wheel disc brakes became standard.
The final version. the 280 SL. made its public appearance early in 1968. Most notable was the increased engine displacement to 2. 78 cubic centimeters. which bumped up torque and horsepower to 180. The interiors were upgraded. along with a myriad of detail refinements. The final 280 SL came off the assembly line in March 1971. and a total of 23. 85 Mercedes-Benz 280 SLs were produced during the model run. making it the most popular of all the roadsters built to date.
This beautiful Mercedes-Benz 280 SL. with the desirable European headlights. factory air conditioning and automatic transmission is an example of the 'California Coupé'. a 2+2 version (first introduced on the 250SL) that came with a rear bench seat occupying the space hitherto reserved for the convertible top. A removable hardtop provided the weather protection. the bench seat provided a larger luggage area or room for a couple of kids in the back.
It left the factory on October 30th 1969 as a US Specification 1970 model with factory “frigking” Air Conditioning. Automatic Transmission with Power Steering. Hardtop and rear Bench Seat in DB180 Silver over Red 132 Tex-Leather interior. Other options included a Becker Grand Prix AM/FM Radio. Outside rear view mirror on the left side. and tinted glass. This little sports car was destined for Florida. it's first owner. J. N. Kenny of Pompano Beach. Many years later. it ended up in the collection of Mr. Gassmann. then owner of the Victoria. BC. Mercedes-Benz dealership. Three-Point Motors. In 1994/1995 Mr. Gassmann had his 280SL carefully restored by a team of 300SL/190SL/Pagoda Mercedes-Benz specialists. Gassmann kept the car until 1998 before selling it on to its most recent owner.
The restoration. back in 1995. was performed in Canada by marque expert and “300SL Guru”. Rudi Koniczek. Koniczek stripped the car to bare metal. repaired and deficiencies and had the car painted in the original DB180 Silver Metallic. The interior of this 280SL is almost completely original and in very fine condition. It is increasingly difficult to find car with correct interiors. as the modern replacement kits and custom seats are never quite the same as the ones originally found in the cars. You can't replace that texture or smell! The Mercedes-Benz Tex-Leather is very very durable.
Outside. the roadster is painted in its original and classic Silver Metallic (DB180). as is its hardtop. and it is fitted with Michelin XZX tires on steel wheels with color-keyed wheel covers. Inside. one will find a superbly preserved interior in the original MB Red Tex-Leather (132) over Red (3000) tuft carpeting. that features the gated automatic transmission selector. full instrumentation with a clock. and a Becker Grand Prix AM/FM radio.
Mechanically. this 280SL has been gone through and well-maintaned by classic Mercedes-Benz experts both here in Victoria and in Vancouver. Most recently it has been serviced and tuned by TC Motors. a local classic MB repair shop. They adjusted the value on the transmission and the car is shifting better than any 280SL we've ever owned. Acceleration is equally smooth. There are a few slight weeps of oil from the oil pan and rear differential. but not dripping onto the floor.
Cosmetically there is a small rock chip that has been touched up on the drivers door and a 1” scratch near the rear left corner of the hardtop. on the body of the car. The notches in the body beside the headlights are still present. Paint metered evenly throughout the vehicle with no signs of rust anywhere. The underside has that European rock protection. and appears very solid. That was probably done in 1995 during the restoration. All of the spot welds and stampings on the car are clearly visible. The gaps are very good throughout and paint. other than those two scuffs. is near concours condition. The chrome and polished metal are also in very good condition with little sign of age or weathering.
The 280 SL was arguably the best of the second-generation Mercedes-Benz roadsters. and this carefully restored (and preserved!) example will be enjoyed by its new owners whether they chose to drive or show it.  It comes complete with a copy of the original data card from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center. which verifies its equipment and numbers. A tool roll. original warranty book. warranty plate. A/C manual . adio manual. antenna booklet. and a spare tire cover are all included. The current mileage at 92. 02 miles is believed to be original. but not documented.
It is incredibly hard to find a Pagoda as nice as this one. The “California Coupes” are much rarer than the two-top Roadsters. they also have more luggage capacity and are better for long journeys. This is the kind of car you drive with the hardtop on or off; it looks outstanding in both configurations. We believe this car would rate to a 2+ condition and is a very clean. older restoration that can be driven without worry and even shown at local car events and rallies. You'd be very happy driving this Pagoda and as recent sales show. they can be worth over 200. 00 USD in number 1 condition. Most of the cars we've seen in the past year all needed extensive re-conditioning. this one needs nothing but a good driver.
