1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Coup

Mercedes W111 Coupés offer a unique combination of unrivalled glamour combined with equally unrivalled solidity. The 280SE Coupé was introduced in 1967 as a more powerful replacement for the 250SE and. in total. 3. 97 were produced. They represented an extremely expensive car when new.

This left-hand drive 280 is finished in the wonderful combination of dark metallic blue with a dark blue fabric roof and a black leather interior. As a US market car. it has been in Beverley Hills. California until 2005. remaining in the ownership of Karl Von Fielder for well over twenty years. Since arriving in the UK. this Mercedes has had three owners. We believe its odometer reading of circa 87000 miles to be genuine based on the car's condition.

In terms of condition this Mercedes is quite exceptional throughout. and extremely original. After careful inspection we have determined that. apart from a replacement rear panel at some stage. and one extremely high quality repaint. the body has never had any form of repair and remains in a totally rust-free state. The paintwork is glorious with a deep. mirror finish shine. All the brightwork is excellent and the fabric covering to the roof. which suits it perfectly. as new. The screen and door rubbers have also recently been replaced.

Inside. again. this 280SE is in superb and largely original condition. The black leather trim is all original and unworn but with a light. pleasing patina. The carpets were replaced in 2006 with a top quality set from Klaus Hermann Mayer Kraftfahrzeugtechnik.

Being an American-spec car. dealer-fit air-conditioning is fitted. This is not currently functioning. although the compressor clutch engages as it should indicating that it would take little to have the system working again. The standard heating/ventilation system works correctly.

All electronic accessories work correctly. including the desirable Becker Mexico stereo.

Mechanically our Mercedes has benefitted from unstinting expenditure to ensure that it remains in the best possible condition. There are extensive bills and paperwork going back to 2001 that detail. amongst regular servicing. a rebuilt transmission. a rebuilt cylinder head. a new cooling system and. most recently. renewal of the entire braking system in 2011. The original steel wheels wear a matching set of recent Fulda radial tyres.

It is hard to find these stylish cars in such beautiful structural. cosmetic and mechanical condition. And so stylish a car is rarely so usable or reliable.
