1967 Alfa Romeo Spider 1600 Duetto RHD

- According to the Alfa Romeo Museum Archives this very rare right hand drive Spider Duetto was manufactured on May 16th 1967 and invoiced by the factory to Alfa Romeo England on May 18th 1967. Its original colours were white with a black vinyl interior (as it is now) and it was first registered for road use in England on August 1st 1967.
- The first five years of this cars life are unknown. but the DVLA ownership report that we have on file show that in April 1972 the car was licensed to a Mr Norman Dyer of Edgware. Middlesex. and registered as RPH-60F. The handwritten and photocopied text is then hard to decipher on the copy of the early log book. but ownership soon passed to a Christopher Booker in North Lancing in West Sussex. The car was then to remain in this area of the South Coast for the next thirty years.
- In May 1974 the car was purchased by a Peter Philip Bonetti of Banstead in Surrey. believed to be the Mr Bonetti who was a Chelsea Football Club goalkeeper in the 1960's and 70's. However. due to either a dislike of the car or his imminent transfer to the St. Louis Stars of St. Louis. Missouri. USA. ownership passed to a Brian Tugwell of Storrington. West Sussex. in September 1974.
- Ownership soon passed to a Robert Smalley of Worthing. West Sussex. and again to a Miss Margaret Gray in September 1976 of Hove. West Sussex. Miss Gray soon became a Mrs Dyer and moved to Tarring. near Worthing. before ownership passed to a Mrs Joan Wands of Hove in September 1977. A year later in September 1978 the car was acquired by a Michael Brown of Hove.
- In May 1979 the car was acquired by a Michael Godfrey of nearby Arundel. West Sussex. After enjoying the car for a longer period than the previous eight owners. Mr Godfrey parted with the car in June 1983 when it was acquired by a Stephen Williams of Brighton.
- In May 1985 the Spider was acquired by a Mr Peter Sheppard. also of Brighton. a Gentleman who was to own the car for the next 28 years.
- Mr Sheppard seems to have been a regular house mover around the West Sussex area with the exception of a brief stay in Abingdon. Oxfordshire. before finally settling in Sunbury-on-Thames. Surrey. south west London. In August 1992 Mr Sheppard transferred his initial bearing number plate PWS-17 from his Bentley Mulsanne onto the Spider where it was to remain until he transferred it onto a Bentley Continental GT in November 2007.
- After a couple of years of no use Mr Sheppard sold the car in March 2013 to a Gentleman in Bude. Cornwall. The Gentleman's intention was to carry out a restoration of the car but due to a house renovation this never happened and we acquired the car from him in August 2013. The car has been in our dry storage barn since but due a reduction in our storage space the car is now for sale.
- Spider 1600 Duettos are very beautiful motor cars with their elegant and simple Pininfarina coachwork. and they are great fun and delicate to drive on their 15” wheels and narrow tyres. As the factory only made 380 with right hand drive. examples such as this car are incredibly rare.
- This Duetto requires a full restoration. Its original engine was replaced some time ago with an Alfetta 1600 unit. but otherwise the car is mostly complete. Such a rare car deserves to be restored to an exceptional standard. during which a correct series engine should be installed. Upon completion the new owner will have a very special motor car that will be highly rewarding to drive.
