1980 MERCEDES 350SL ROADSTER (R 107) AUTO. NEW  MOT. Reg. “MUM 954V”

This is one of the last of the 3. 5 V8 engined R 107 SL (“Sports Leicht”) models built for the UK market  in 1980. The fuel injected 3500cc V8 model was discontinued the same year. even  though  these engines were considered “bulletproof” . and were replaced by less reliable variants.   “Mum”. as she is known because of her distinctive original registration number.  is in excellent all round condition. and has recently been the subject of a considerable amount of  mechanical and body restoration work . having  been  stored  by the previous owner at his home in Bath for over 3 years.

Finished in metallic Lapis Blue (which was only available on the last models). with blue check fabric trim and  original alloy wheels (including the spare).  she has also had a recent new blue hood. resulting in a very attractive overall appearance (see photos) and watertight cabin . The factory hard top (off the car at the moment but fitted within 10 minutes) is also in excellent condition. having been dry stored off the car for approx. 4 years (see photo). It has the very desirable and original registration number “MUM 954V”. The car is currently on a SORN but can be taxed for use immediately.

Bodily. the main problem were the outer sills on both sides. which had some rust along the edges and were not considered OK for the MOT. Rather then repair them as suggested. I decided to replace them completely with new  factory made sills (cost 400 each to buy)  and the welding  was carried out by a former MBUK specialist).

The original interior blue fabric is in good clean condition with only one area of wear which is as usual on the shoulder of the drivers seat. Please note that although it is a 4 seater. the rear seats are suitable for children only. She is fitted with rear seat belts and front inertia belts which are all in good condition (see photos).

Mechanically. the main work for the  new MOT  included new exhaust manifold gaskets and studs because of an exhaust blow (quite a big job). reconditioned front brake calipers and new rear trailing arm suspension  links. She also had an engine service. new distributor cap and leads. new plugs and a new heavy duty battery. The total cost of all this work in the last 3 months was over 1500 pounds; however it has been well worth the expense. as the car is now mechanically perfect. drives really well. and will be good for another 20 years I am sure.

I have no reason to believe that the recorded mileage of 155. 00 is not genuine and was confirmed by the previous owner prior to his purchase. It should be noted that these engines are very understressed in this car. and are good for double this mileage.

Please bear in mind that despite all the work that has been done. this is still a 34 year old vehicle.
