1936 Rolls-Royce 25/30 Freestone & Webb Sports Saloon GUL68

A handsome and original car. appealingly shabby and correct. which has just benefited from some major attention. The body structure seems good and sound. with excellent door fits. closing with a lovely ‘thunk'. Paintwork is old and showing its age. and the leather is all original and characterful. We have just completely overhauled the engine at great expense. fitted a new clutch. a new stainless steel exhaust system. and the tyres are recent too. Comes with a very impressive toolkit. cased in the boot. Still a bit more to do. but the car is well on the way to greatness.

Snippets – Farr of Worksop Manor & Weirs of Edinburgh:

Capt John Farr (1882/1951) was the great-nephew of Sir John Robinson (1839/1929) – Philanthropist. Brewery Founder & Thoroughbred breeder (Papyrus – Derby. Flamingo – 2000 Guineas. Omar Khayyan – Kentucky Derby). Sir John's son. John S. Robinson was a keen jockey & died in 1898 during a horse race. In 1905 Sir John purchased Worksop Manor (home to the great Neville. Talbot & Norfolk Families). upon his death in 1929 his nephew Captain John Farr purchased the estate & some of the horses in order to carry on the breeding programme. Capt Farr served with Lord Methuen during the Boer War. during peace time he formed his formed J & S Farr. Electrical Engineers who claimed to “stock ready charged batteries to fit any type of car”. In 1914 he obtained a commission with the Hussars & in 1915 took part in action at Sulva Bay. his unit was evacuated to Egypt & he assumed command of 1st Camel Corps!! In 1940 he donated the enormous sum of £5. 00 (£200. 00 today) to buy a Spitfire for the RAF. After being with Capt Farr for just two year GUL68 was acquired by Donald St. Clair Weir (1900/59) of Edinburgh. Donald was a keen cricketer & played for Scotland alongside Rab Bruce-Lockhart. Gilbert Hole & Ben Tod; in 1951 Donald became President of the Scottish Cricket Union. Other Weirs of interest are Thomas Weir (17thC) who was accused of being a Witch and was strangled & burnt as a result of his confession to various un-natural acts! William Weir who was an automobile enthusiast & founder of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club. he was due to meet with a certain Mr Rolls to discuss the formation of a car company to be called Rolls-Weir. the plan fell through & the rest is history!
