SELLER REMARKS

Ford finally replaced the venerable flathead V8 in 1954. delivering an all-new OHV V8 that worked especially well in the right-sized 1954 Mercury Monterey hardtop. Slightly more powerful than the Ford version. the slick Merc also offered clean styling and wonderful '50s details that only add to this nicely preserved car's allure. From its all-original interior to the recently freshened paint. this is an unusual '50s cruiser that really moves.

Repainted quite recently in its original Parklane Green with a white top. this '54 Merc is the antidote for '50s excess. Trim. well-proportioned. and with just the right amount of chrome. it looks upscale without being showy. As a very nicely preserved original car before the paint job two years ago. the sheetmetal was in excellent shape. needing only minor work to get it into its current outstanding condition. Nice panel fit means the doors close with a precision that modern cars can't match. and with the long chrome side spears. alignment is especially critical. The color is exactly right. too. with no modern metallics in it to take away from the vintage shine. although urethane paints mean that it'll look this good for years to come. The chrome is a combination of restored and original components. with a tidy-looking grille that's a bit simpler than the year before and great stainless details like the emblems on the C-pillars and the beautiful trunk medallion. This car is every bit as nice as it looks in photos.

The very nicely preserved original interior should tell you all you need to know about how well this car has been treated over the years. The two-tone upholstery is 1954 vinyl which might show a few signs of age. but probably not decades' worth. A few nips and tucks have kept it in very usable shape and given the hobby's newfound love for originality. it would be a crime to try to restore the passenger compartment of this Merc. The seats. door panels. and even the carpets defy the years and speak well of the guys who cared for it. Instruments are sensibly laid out with a large speedometer and smaller auxiliary gauges underneath. and the two-tone dash matches the bodywork quite nicely. even with the repaint. The original AM radio is still in the dash and the 3-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission is managed from a familiar column shifter. The back seat looks like a great place to spend some time. and the trunk still carries its original mats and spare tire with matching hubcap.

The 256 cubic inch Y-block V8 was all-new in 1954. and offered more power and less weight than the flathead it replaced. Smooth as silk with a bubbly idle. it still looks quite correct under the hood. from the oil bath air cleaner to the unique wrap-around exhaust manifolds. That certainly appears to be factory-applied engine enamel and aside from a few routine maintenance parts. it's pretty much as the factory built it. With highway-friendly gears out back. it's a very pleasant highway cruiser that purrs along at modern speeds. The chassis is undercoated. which only highlights a few recent service items like the tailpipe and brake lines. but otherwise it's also quite original. Correct BFGoodrich Silvertown wide whitewall tires look great on those bright red wheels with full wheelcovers.

An unusual '50s cruiser with plenty of power and a demure look. this 1954 Mercury Monterey is every bit as wonderful as you remember your own being back in the day. Call today!
