1973 Dodge Polara Police Pursuit Sedan

The Polara was Dodge's answer to the Ford Galaxie and Chevrolet Impala. It was a full-sized model. offered in 4-door sedan and station wagon styles. as well as 2-door coupes and convertibles. Police Pursuit versions of the Polara came equipped with a 440 cubic inch V8 engine. producing a stout 280 horsepower.

This particular Polara was used as a California Highway Patrol cruiser. and is a “slicktop”. having no lights bolted on top of the roof. making the car less noticeable while waiting for speeding drivers on California highways. It is one of 1. 65 ordered by the California Highway Patrol for 1973 and was supplied through Swift Dodge in Sacramento. California. We were told it was issued to the captain of the Claremont CHP office and purchased as a commuter car after being retired.

Drivetrain: The Dodge Polara listed here has an eight-cylinder engine with an automatic transmission and is in running condition. All systems have been inspected for damage and leaks and the only issue found was a small head gasket leak. Other than that it runs great – although we have only driven it at parking lot speeds in our parking structure.

Prior to the museum's ownership. the suspension was completely rebuilt as well as the transmission. which was rebuilt from another 1973 Dodge Polara. The power steering pump. steering box and alternator have also been rebuilt.

Exterior: The Polara's body was straightened and repainted by a previous owner. While the paint is in good shape. there are a lot of swirls in it from what appears to be a bad buff job. The car is still equipped with its original CHP push bars. spot lights and whip antenna. Additionally. all the lights have been tested and work. with the exception of the spot lights which were not tried.

Interior: The interior looks good. especially the headliner and seats which were reupholstered by the previous owner. The dashboard has a couple cracks. but all the gauges are in good shape and appear to work. The original heavy rubber mat still sits on the floor. but the steering wheel is badly cracked and the interior cabin light is missing.

Overall: Please keep in mind that this Dodge has been in storage for several years. We recommend that potential buyers inspect the car in person. or engage a qualified mechanic to examine the vehicle. It has a clear title and is currently on PNO in the state of California. The buyer assumes the cost of and responsibility for registering the vehicle. including the payment of any required fees. if applicable.
