  model description

A new styling treatment to the front end was the most striking change for the 1979 Trans Am. laying back the nose at a 22-degree angle from the "Batmobile's" 16-degree angle for better aerodynamics. The Trans Am became a "bottom breather". picking up some fresh air for cooling at the bumper grilles. the remaining amount from underneath the front bumper. The traditional grille between the headlamps was gone. replaced by a pair mounted in the bumper pad extensions. The grilles were in a matte black and contained the turn signal/park lamp lenses in the upper outer corners. The now common four rectangular headlamps were each set in deep recesses. surrounded by low gloss bezels. The Pontiac crest continued to reside in the center of the front fascia.

In addition to the styling change. a bright spot to the front end restyle was a deeper front spoiler. now made of a flexible material rather than the hard plastic of the '77-78's. The change in material made it a bit more friendly to curb stones and parking lot dips. The spoiler actually was responsible for a major portion of the cooling air which was channeled to the radiator. Larger wheel air deflectors (or spats) were fitted. blending with the new spoiler.

The most drastic and best looking change to the rear had to be the tail lamp assemblies. The lamps now stretched corner to corner. with a hinged fuel filler door in the center. While this may seem enough of a change. the big news was that the tail lamps had a "blacked out" look; at least until the lights were activated. then the red was proudly broadcast. For 1979. this was major cool!

Exterior

The Starlight Black exterior is in excellent restored condition. As one can see in the photos. the paint has a brilliant gloss. great shine. and smooth finish. This Trans Am was treated to a professional repaint within the last year with all new correct gold decals applied. Often many Trans Am's will have particularly chipped up front ends. this car does not. both bumpers are in excellent shape with no flaking or faded paint. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There may be some small blemishes that were too faint to show up in photos. but nothing that is really noticeable from about two or five feet away. There are some light scratches on the driver's window. The tires have excellent tread left and are sized 255/60/15. The OEM snowflake have been reconditioned in black with is an excellent compliment to he color scheme of this car. They have no curb rash and feature 4 new center caps and new lug nuts. All weather-stripping and window sweeps have recently been replaced. The weather-stripping is still new and stiff so it will take some force to close the doors until the weather-stripping relaxes a bit. The trunk has been recently painted and also has a new trunk mat. One may notice in the photos that the car does not have hood springs installed. though they are included with the car. This was an intentional choice made by the previous owner. Pontiac "Shaker" hoods are simply not as stiff as those from other F-Bodies because of the hole for the shaker. After repeated opening and closing the hood can actually start to deform and bow across the middle causing it not to fit the fender lines correctly. To alleviate this potential problem the previous owner decided to not use hood springs and installed a hood prop instead.   The factory hood hinges with the mounts for the hood springs are still on the car so the future owner could install the springs if he or she chooses.

This This Trans Am has a stamping on the radiator core support. which is pictured below. The core support show a "11 20 78" stamp. or November 20. 1978. This stamping would be correct and original as it precedes the car's build date of the second week of January. 1978 (01B). As one can imagine. if this Trans Am had ever sustained even a minor front end collision this part would have been repaired or replaced. The original stamping is great to see in tact.

The Trans Am looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Interior

The black deluxe vinyl interior of the Trans Am looks splendid. The seat covers have recently been replaced and are in excellent condition with no excessive wear. rips. or stains. The carpet has also been newly replaced and is great condition with no major stains. rips. or holes. The dash pad is in great condition with no cracks. fading. or sun damage. An awesome stereo system was professionally installed in this Trans Am and sounds and works excellent. A JVC head unit with single CD was installed replacing the worn out original stereo and a 1700 watt 4 way Rockford Fosgate amp was mounted in the trunk. New 6x9 Rockford Fosgate speakers were installed in the rear deck and new 4" front speakers were installed in the front kick panels. The door panels were recently replaced and look new with no cracks or splits. and both door pulls are new. solid and in tact. The headliner and package tray have also newly been replaced and are in great condition. All of the interior plastics are in excellent shape with nice texture. correct finish. and fastened in place. This car has not been smoked in; there are no burn marks and no aroma what so ever.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Trans Am appears to be in great mechanical condition. The Pontiac 400 engine in this Trans Am has been rebuilt and runs strong. This 400 Pontiac engine features: bored . 60 over making it a 410 CID. flat top Federal Mogel forged pistons. Lunati Cam(with 490 lift). New 750 cfm Holley carb. . Edelbrock intake. new HEI distributor with new 8mm wires. new fuel pump. etc. etc. The transmission in this TA is a rebuilt 400 turbo with mild shift kit. The exhaust is also new and features hooker headers and Flowmaster mufflers with 2. 5" pipes with an "H" pipe. This TA also has competition engineering subframe connectors and adjustable traction bars. This Trans Am is an exceptional driver that feels great on the road and at highway speeds. There is no smoke when starting or driving the car. It starts right away every time. idles well. and runs excellent. The brakes do not pull to one side or the other. stop as they should. and have recently been overhauled. Also. the engine is clean and nicely detailed as one can see from the photos. The aftermarket air cleaner base and chrome valve covers really set this car apart and freshen up the engine bay. A very nice set of auto meter silver faced gauges have been installed on the steering column and accurately read the rpm's. oil pressure. and running temperature of this incredible TA. There are a few items on the car that do not work such as the blower for heater and horn. Currently the emergency brake system is not hooked up on this TA. but the E brake pedal assembly does come with the car. This Trans Am has lots of power. handles well. and is so much fun to drive. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car. especially on a beautiful day.

Overall Condition

Overall. this 1979 Trans Am is in excellent restored condition. It is a great value and we have it priced to sell. To find a black Trans Am in this condition for our asking price is nearly impossible to do and is a smart investment. Black Trans Am's always hold a premium over other colors. This car turns heads and gets tons of attention wherever it goes. The value of these cars has gone up exponentially in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector or the average enthusiast. Cars like this are the Barrett Jackson and Mecum stars of the future. While the previous owner stated that believed the mileage to be original. it is marked on the title as "Exceeds Limits. " This is not very important for this car since it has been totally restored. but we try our best for full disclosure. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.
