Snippets: Whurueldych to Hurlditch & SingSing to Ossining. The first owner Major R. M. Coles lived at Hurlditch Court in Devon. An early reference to the house can be found as far back as 1351 when it was known as Whurueldych. Major Coles was a property developer & owner of the firm known as Lipstone Estate. his father Albert Coles was also a building contractor & he was responsible for many large buildings in the Three Towns (Plymouth. Devonport & East Stonehouse – merged in 1914 & given City Status by Royal Charter in 1928). By 1969 GMP64 is shown to be with Mr Austin Basner of Harriman who was member of the American Orchid Society. The next American owner was Richard Corti of Ossining – early 17th century maps show that this area was occupied by the Mohegan tribe & it was known as “Sint Sinck” which means “Stone upon Stone”. refering to the beds of limestone rock in that area. By the end of the 18th Century the area had become known as Sing-Sing and in 1825 the construction of Sing-Sing prison began. In 1901 on March the 25th. the village changed its name to Ossining. because the name Sing-Sing had become notorious in connection with the prison.
