1979 Pontiac Firebird
WS6 SPECIAL PERFOMANCE PKG.
W72 PONTIAC 400
ALL NUMBERS MATCHING DRIVELINE
1979 was the last year for any real Pontiac Performance as the 403 ci olds v8 and 400 ci Pontiac v8 were to be retired in favour of the lighter. ore fuel efficent 301v8 and the 1980 model year was to see only a 301 small block v8 available with a turbo version optional for some small consillation for those that still wanted some sort of performance.
With the popularity of the Trans Am at an all time high in 1979. round 117. 00 units sold. 979 saw those that still wanted some extra performance able to tick the box for the WS6 Trans Am Performance Package which featured the W72/L78 engine option 6. 6ltr/400ci Pontiac v8 which also came with the manditory 4 speed Muncie heavy duty manual transmission. This option. lthough great for performance. ould not pass California's strict new mileage and emission laws so was NOT legal for sale in that state which meant sales of this option were way down infact only 5. 01 Trans Ams with the Trans Am Special Performance Package were sold from a total of 117. 00 units. Not only did you get the High Output engine but it also featured the WS6 handling options which came in the shape of a larger rear sway bar. xtra bracing on key suspension components and 4 wheel disc brakes + 8" alloy road wheels and heavy duty shock absorbers. All this came at a cost and the total price for all this performance was a shade under $7. 00!quite a big spend in '79.
Now what we have here is exactly the car I have just described and is all numbers matching with the exception of the colour which was originally Platinum Silver but has been changed many years ago to the. rguably better looking. olour of Glacier Blue. It still has its original untouched interior which presents great with only a small crack in the centre of the dash and a well installed aftermarket CD player perhaps detracting from the original interior finish. The Numbers matching engine has been recently rebuilt with a set of roller rockers being fitted in place of the original pressed steel units and a set of Edelbrock Signature Series Valve covers replacing the chrome stockers(which came with the car) aside form that it appears all correct even down to the Rochester Quadrajet Carb and Shaker Hood Scoop. It runs and sounds great with just a hint of a larger than stock cam to give it a nice rumble at idle and it shifts nicely throught the gears driving throught the factory 3. 23 10 bolt Safe T Trac rear end. The floors appear all original and donnt have anything other than a little surface rust and 35 years of accumulated road grime on them and the body itself is straight . lean and rust free with a nice shine to the paintwork still evident. Also has power steering. actory A/C. isher Body "T" Tops and Tilt Steering all on the options list.
This is a really clean straight car but not a concourse restored trailer queen. ts a driver and not a car you'd be too scared to drive anywhere. I doubt there would be too many of these 79 ws6 cars in the country as they are probably even rarer than the Black Special Edition's and this car is well documented as it includes all the PHS documents with the sale.
