Rare 1967 Volvo Amazon 123GT, no reserve!...with parts car! for sale

Current customer rating: current rating for this car(2.5) based on 527 votes

This is quite possibly the Holy Grail of classic Volvos. an intact. driving. and registered Euro-spec first-year 1967 123GT with a clear title and the correct B18 engine included.

By definition all Volvo 123GTs are special; estimations indicate that Volvo built only 1. 00 examples. Competitive driving dispensed with many of those within their first few years and neglect and collisions consumed most of the remainder.

This one is extra special for a few reasons. Volvo of Canada built some 123GT cars but Volvo in Sweden built this particular 123GT specifically for the Swedish market. This car was sold new in Sweden and privately exported to the US early in its life. It currently has a US-spec speedometer but every other part like the Swedish-specific escutcheons remain intact. So it's the real deal. the purest 123GT model. Most enthusiasts consider the Swedish-built 123GTs the most desirable due to their provenance and their equipment package. Volvo of Canada also assembled GTs but those models do not have as many GT-specific components as their Swedish-built counterparts. The Canadian version did however have a limited slip differential unlike the Swedish GT.

Here is the cool part: I added a working LSD axle from a Canadian GT. making this car a “super” GT !What makes this auction special is what else it includes. Naturally it includes the Euro-spec GT; however. it also includes a very solid and straight 1967 122S body and nearly enough parts to build a second car from it.

ENGINE

A number of things make this B18 engine noteworthy. among them it has the correct code. During this period Volvo did not number its engines to match its body numbers; however. it numbered its GT engines with a specific code: 496860. The 4968 is cast in the block and the “60" is stamped. This engine has this code. The SU carburetors work well. The engine itself has very good compression: 150. 160. 160. and 150. Though it runs well I removed it for inspection and installed in its place a good running B20 engine. The correct 60-code engine in indeed included in this auction. It is complete from pan to SU carburetors and will of course accompany the car. The B20 engine in the car is also SU equipped. has breakerless ignition hidden inside the stock distributor and aftermarket headers. Also included is the correct Motorola alternator but it is not on the car as I lack the regulator. The B20 engine has a Bosch altenator.

DRIVETRAIN

The correct M41 transmission shifts well and does not make noise. Though I have not disassembled this transmission its synchronizers and bearings appear to be in very good shape. The Laycock de Normanville overdrive works as intended. The overdrive switch and in-dash indicator light are both intact and functional. The car runs and drives well. It handles better due to IPD progressive-rate springs and Bilstein monotube dampers. It rides on stock 15x4 wheels and 165R15 radial tires. The car has been upgraded with all new rubber brake hoses and some steel lines.

BODY

This car originally wore exterior color code 94 (dark green) and interior color code 425-552 (tan). Though presentable the body suffers rust and amateur repairs representative of a 46-year-old car. Perfection would require a full restoration; however. you could you drive the car and restore later. Note that this auction includes many spare parts including a very solid and clear-titled late '67 122S roller that lived its life in dry California. If you don't want the parts car I will give you a $1. 00 rebate towards the winning bid. The front fenders. hood. and nose seem solid. The bumpers are nice. rust free. and straight. The body has rusted through in the common spots: the floor. rockers. and rear quarters. The parts from the spare non-GT model would make this one solid.

The original 123GT badges are in very nice condition. The 123GT trunk emblem is NOS. I have the small stainless moldings that fit under the side windows and they are in great shape. Also included are the following body-related items:

Rare Volvo-script GT fender-mounted mirrors

Super-rare Hella fog and spot lights (the spot light is NOS but has very minor shelf rash on the reflector and the fog light is in excellent condition. )

GT-specific brackets for Hella spot and fog lights including under-bumper “L” support brackets.

GT-specific Loud horn

GT-specific relay bank for Hella lights and Loud horn.

GT-specific wiring harness with provision for under hood lights and trunk light.

GT-specific fuse box and cover

Under-dash switches for spot and fog light operation.

Under-hood and trunk lights (not installed currently but included. see pictures)

Like-new or NOS front turn-signal lenses. rubber housings. and reflectors.

New or like-new tail-light lenses with NOS rubber gaskets.

NOS or like-new rear window molding parts.

A nice extra windshield with presentable aluminum trim.

Complete factory tool kit with perfect pouch.

Original jackA reprinted copy of the 123GT Supplemental Manual

See pictures and link to pictures below.

INTERIOR

The interior is clean and serviceable but the passenger seat has a tear in the shoulder area. Also. the backrest has separated at the top seam. The door panels are nice red panels that have been dyed tan. The mats are just black cloth but correct rubber mats are available in reproduction. The GT-specific steering wheel has a crack in the center horn button. The GT-specific dash pad has some cracks. The auction also includes a nicer (albeit imperfect) extra GT dash and pad. The GT-specific tachometer has the '67-specific shiny smooth housing and “VOLVO” on fascia. Other included interior-related items: Chrome Recaro GT-specific folding seat mechanisms

Under dash switches for spot and fog light operation (as noted in body items)

Canadian 123GT only 4-way flasher switch with wiring.

Very nice extra speedo housing.

An extra very nice heater/fan housing with heater core.

Extra GT dash and dash pad (as noted in the preceding paragraph).

SUMMARY

It is has not been restored but it is a very complete. correct. licensed. running. driving. stopping car with the correct original 123GT engine. a clear 123GT title. a spare rolling shell. and enough parts to nearly build a second car from that shell. The items in this auction represent several years of careful collecting by a very detail-oriented Volvo enthusiast (one who came from Sweden as well). As this collection indicates I had every intention on restoring this car myself; however. a few key life changes since I started collecting have made it untenable to do this car justice. It pains me to sell this car but it's in its best interests to go to an enthusiast who can give this car the attention it needs. I believe that this is the right car for the dedicated enthusiast. It is listed in the world wide 123GT registry and the Swedish Volvo Amazon registry. Volvo 123GT cars have significantly increased value lately and this one is special among them. Since the 123GT is based on the standard 122 restoration would be simple. Since this auction includes a good spare 122 body restoration would be affordable. It's the GT-specific items that make one so difficult and expensive to restore; however. the comprehensive list of GT-specific items included with this auction eliminate that problem. If finished properly this car would emerge as one of the most desirable 123GTs in existence. I truly would like to see it go to a good home.
