Merit Partners is pleased to present this outstanding 86 Backdate 911 with a very desirable long-hood conversion.  We purchased this car from one of our out of state clients that has a big Porsche collection and spares no expense on his cars.  This special 911 exemplifies the OEM+ build ideology we love - everything tasteful, everything purposeful, nothing overdone.  This car is sublimely purposeful in its mission with the look of a Singer but at a fraction of the price.  Cars like this represent what many new generation buyers are looking for and that is a classic car that has been modernized and made much more relevant from a power, suspension and fun to drive perspective.  This car has been almost completely redone.  Starting at the frunk with a steel hood, 911S bumper, impact strip, fenders, trim, horn grill and door frames were sourced and then H4 headlights added to complete the backdate look.  Avant-Garde took on the huge task of seamlessly integrating the new front clip panels to caplet the back date transformation.  While “under the knife”, the rocker panels were deleted, a fiberglass rear bumper with chrome panted bumperettes was installed and a custom license plate frame housing in stall and LED lights were fabricated.  Talbot-style mirrors were fitted and custom Porsche graphics adorn both doors as well as the rear deck lid.  With all the body updates complete, panel gaps and body lines were checked, measured and set and then everything was finished and blended in the correct Schwarz (code A1) paint.Rounding out the exterior work, a polished metal engine grill was installed in place of the plastic grill; an early rear window (without the awkward looking third brake light) was installed, and all the window seals were replaced (including the rear quarter window gaskets). Finally, polished oil cooler lines can be seen running the length of the passenger side of the car for the perfect bit of “show” without being ostentatious.  No air-cooled build would be complete without a genuine set of Fuchs. This particular set is 16” staggered 7” front and 9” rear finished in an RSR inspired satin silver with black windows. The Fuchs hang on 52mm wheel studs and are held in place with open, steel wheel nuts.

Upon opening  the doors you are greeted by GTS Classics R seats, customized with Alcantara inserts, nickel-plated grommets, and contrast stitching in white. They fit the aesthetic of the car as though optioned from the factory, and fit the driver as though custom molded; they keep you planted, and grip you In the right places without the RS door pull instead of the standard door handle.  The entire door panel is styled after the mInimalist RS America cars, yet were customized further to maintain the creature comfort of power windows.  We installed brand new carpet throughout the car and an A/C system is included as well to give the car an all season appeal.
Inside the car there is a complete Rennline pedal set and black leather MOMO Prototipo wheel. Upon startup it's clear this isn't a stock 3.2 M930, SSI heat exchangers were mated to a Dansk muffler for the perfect air-cooled tone with none of the drone and resonance we all fear when fitting aftermarket exhausts to our cars.  Lastly, Steve Wong of 911chips put together a custom tune thats installed on the factory DME.  Recent service included a valve adjustment and a leak down test that showed less than 8% loss across all cylinders.

While the engine was subtly modified, the suspension received the works:  Hollow torsion bars, 22mm in front and 28mm in the rear.  Elephant Racing concentric control arm mounts, rear monoball bushings, and Polybronze bushings throughout, with Newer Bilstein Sport shocks and a Weltmeister strut bar in the frunk.  Steering was perfected with 930 tie-rods and freshly rebuilt axles.  While the axles were out, the brake calipers were rebuilt and zinc coated.  The rotors were replaced and Weltmeister stainless steel brake lines were installed in favor of the OEM rubber lines.  The remaining hardware was either zinc plated or powder coated in satin black.  Overlooking no detail, the 915 gearbox was rebuilt with new first and second gear synchros.  A short-shift kit was fitted with new bushings and a sport clutch and flywheel were installed with a new throw-out bearing.

To sum up this car, we will say that it is one of best overall restomods we have ever driven including Singers.  While it doesn't quite achieve what a million dollar Singer does in terms of overall performance and aesthetics, it achieves so much in a driving experience at a fraction of the price.  It can easily be driven every day and never gets stale like so many of the modern cars do.
