This 1963 Studebaker Avanti R2 is stunningly beautiful, performance machine. In the early 1960s, Studebaker's leadership found itself falling behind its fellow American automakers and sought to produce a fiberglass bodied performance car to compete with Chevy's Corvette and Ford's Thunderbird. To create this new fiberglass car, Studebaker turned to the famed Raymond Loewy and his team to devise the revolutionary design and they did so in 40 days while holed up in a rented house in Palm Springs. What the Loewy team came up with became an instant icon. The new Avanti, Studebaker's first new body style since 1953, featured a wedge shaped body with smooth body lines and an under bumper air intake. The '63 Avanti was also offered with 2 options for an engine, the standard R1 or the supercharged R2. Of the 3,834 Avantis produced in 1963, only 1,552 came with the R2 supercharged option. This particular R2 Avanti is believed to be an early production model and comes to us from a California collector who is believed to have owned the car for 10+ years. Powering this '63 Studebaker Avanti is a Paxton Supercharged 289 V8 engine with a single 4 barrel carburetor, that pushed out 289 horsepower when new. The Supercharged 289 V8 is mated to a fun-to-drive 4 speed manual transmission, which would have been standard equipment on an Avanti R2. This R-2 Avanti is also very well optioned under the hood. Power brakes provide plenty of stopping power for this souped up R2 and the original single master cylinder has been upgraded to a dual master cylinder for improved reliability. This '63 Avanti is also equipped with Power Steering, which makes driving this classic Studebaker much easier and more comfortable. The exterior of this Avanti is finished in a classic Avanti White color that gives this car a more elevated and luxurious look. We also just replaced all 4 tires with brand new Whitewall Radials to give this Avanti a classic look when paired with the full Avanti Wheel Covers and a much smoother ride. The Fawn and Red Regal Interior add to that elevated, almost European, look of the car. The front bucket seats and rear bench seat are covered in beautiful red vinyl. The center console is also finished in red vinyl with small fawn accents. The door panels are finished also with the regal package, in fawn and red. The dash, steering wheel, and headliner are beautiful, finished in fawn. The steering wheel, dash and instrument cluster are in their stock configuration, equipped with an AM radio, 160 MPH speedometer, tachometer, electric clock, water temperature gauge, amp gauge, fuel gauge, oil pressure gauge, and vacuum pressure gauge. Whether you have a garage full of classic cars or you're looking for your very first one, this 1963 Studebaker Avanti R2 would make an excellent choice. Give us a call today!
