1963 Sunbeam Aline GT Series III 3 Ready To Drive and Enjoy, In Georgia for sale
Current customer rating: (552 votes ) based onThis is a very unusual and appealing little Sunbeam. Many are familiar with the Sunbeam Tiger and Alpine convertible. but the GT is a rare version of this car and seldom seen. The GT offered a vast upgrade in luxury appointments. Most noticeable was the removal of the convertible top. This was nicely complemented by full length pleated door panels with a padded arm rail at the top. Additionally. full carpeting graced the feet of the proud owner instead of the rubber mats that came standard on the ST. Sitting down in the fully adjustable seat you would notice the wood steering wheel and burled walnut wood veneered dash. both available only on the GT. To keep everyone dry inside a hard top. painted to match the car's body color (Carnival Red on this example). was now fitted as a standard option. Sunbeam added additional sound deadening under the hood and added a canister type air filter to keep induction noise levels to a minimum. The GT was aimed squarely at the couple who wanted that sports car feel. but a quieter refined ride. Only 5. 63 Series III Alpines were ever built and a very small percentage of them were GTs.
This example was purchased by its current owner 10 years ago and the actual mileage is unknown. It was formerly owned by Ian Spencer. founder of The Sunbeam Alpine Owners Club of America. who oversaw the rebuilding of the engine (which now has approximately 3000 miles on it).

We are listing the Sunbeam for one of our clients.
The current owner and his son restored the car together. He has a passion for Sunbeams and was very fortunate to be able to share that with his son. Once the car was finished they drove it some but very soon life got in the way. The son moved off and got married and this little GT was put up in the garage. where it sat for seven years. It saddened the current owner to see the product of all his and his son's efforts languishing in the garage so he decided to make the car road-worthy and. reluctantly. sell it. in the hopes that someone will buy it. care for it as he has. but use it and have fun with it. This is a rare opportunity to own and enjoy a very rare. yet affordable classic British sports car.
It has a delightful 1600cc engine that revs freely and runs quite well. Power is ample and. combined with the car's Overdrive gearbox. provides very comfortable cruising at speed. The clutch works well and engages right where you would expect.
This car has been driven about 20 miles since being readied again for the road. Following is a list of some of the repairs recently completed:
1 Replaced all the rear axle seals. changed gear oil in differential. replaced rear brake shoes. rear brake hose and rear wheel cylinders. We then flushed the brake system and clutch with Castrol LMA.
2 We drained the fuel tank and re-filled it with fresh fuel. Then we disassembled and cleaned the Weber carburetor. installed all new fuel hoses and a new fuel and air filters.
3 Changed oil and filter using Valvoline VR1 20W50 with ZDDP.
4 Installed a new battery
5 Replaced the intake/exhaust manifold gasket. having both manifolds milled flat in the process to ensure proper sealing.
6 Adjusted the valves.
7 Replaced water pump. thermostat and housing. radiator hoses. clamps. flushed cooling system. then refilled with 50/50 mix distilled water and coolant. Installed new fan belt.
8 Disassemble. clean. re-assemble and adjust emergency brake assemblies.
9 Installed new rear leaf spring bushings.
1 Lubed all front steering and suspension grease fittings. Checked U-joints and topped off gearbox.
This car starts right up and drives very well. There are no shimmies or shakes and the brakes work very evenly. The gearbox shifts into and out of all the gears very well and the electric Overdrive engages purposefully. It really is nice having the Overdrive for driving at modern highway speeds.
The wiring on this car is in excellent condition and appears to have never been mussed about. All of the gauges work. except the clock.
The paint is very nice and shines well. The trunk floor had some rust in it but has been repaired. see pictures. The floors has a few rust perforations. but nothing major. see pictures. If you have any specific picture requests or questions. please email that request before bidding. We work all day but will try to respond in a timely fashion.

I would not hesitate to drive this car anywhere. Being mindful. of course. that it hasn't seen the open road in many years. I would pack a small tool kit. just in case.

I had a question from a gentleman wanting to know if the top can be removed. I replied yes. but it was not easy. However. the owner just emailed me to let me know it is only held on by four clamps. If those are removed and you have two people to lift it of. it isn't that hard. So. if you plan on only driving in good weather. you can leave the hard top at home.
