STUDEBAKER

1964 DAYTONA WAGONAIRE STATION WAGON with SLIDING ROOF

The Earls Court London Motor show car.

For your consideration is a drive 'As is' survivor or a candidate for restoration.

This Studebaker was imported into the UK by the Studebaker Concessionaires B&M Group Ltd in 1963 into their London showroom at 364 to 366 Kensington High Street.

B&M took over the UK dealership from Henley's in 1962 and had big plans to sell a lot of Avanti's in the UK.

Only two Wagonaires were imported in late 1963 that we're assembled at the factory in South Bend Indiana. This Jet Green car and an Astra White one, which was sold to the Jamaican embassy.

Contrary to popular urban myth, most Right Hand Control Studebakers were supplied from the US plant and not built for export in Canada at the Hamilton assembly facility.

Also imported at the same time were nine GT Hawk's, one Daytona Hardtop and one Cruiser sedan.

This particular car was one of four Studebakers on display at the London motor show in 1963. The other cars were an Avanti, GT Hawk and a Cruiser.

You can see this car in the background behind the Avanti in the last image.

I bought this car in 2015 from a long time Studebaker owner here in the UK who had bought the car in the early 1970's.

The car has just over 53k original miles on it and in the last few months I have done the work to get it driving again.

It has some rust in all the side panels and has dents and scrapes from use over it's life here in the UK.

Ordered with Jet Green paint with matching light metallic green fence seat interior. It is fitted with a 259ci V8 with 2 barrel carburettor, automatic transmission, factory disc brakes, sliding roof and radio.

The front has been repainted at some point, but this car still retains a lot of it's original paint. Carpets and seats are all original.

For some reason the original paint on the sliding roof was not applied well, or thin from the factory on the sliding roof and has not aged well.

There is a small tear in the back squab of the rear seat, but overall it is in excellent shape. The card headliner is not present, but I do have a pattern for a replacement to be made.

Work done to get the car back on the road has been pull all the brakes apart and install new seal kits. New front brake pads, water and fuel pump were required. The car has been greased.

All door cards were removed and window cranks greased and oiled. A set of new tyres have been installed on the Cragar mag wheels. Cooling system flushed and anti freeze added.

New spark plugs, points, condenser, cap, rotor button and then tuned up. The original hub caps are supplied with the car.

The 259 Cubic inch V8 is in great condition and has excellent oil pressure.

Automatic transmission works and shifts properly.

The car is fitted with the standard 3.73 differential supplied in all V8 Wagonaire's and is quite peppy off the mark.

This is a great car to smoke around in and improve as you go, or restore.

Just before the close of US Studebaker production B&M cancelled their last order that contained two more Wagonaire's (one Astra White and one Strato Blue) nine GT Hawks and one Bordeaux Red Daytona hardtop.

Five of the GT Hawks were sold to Canada Cycle Co in Melbourne, who were the assemblers and distributors in Australia. I have owned 1.5 of those original cars destined for B&M in my youth growing up in Melbourne.

However, if you have any information on the other Right Hand Control cars that must have been sold in other parts of the globe I would be interested to know where they ended up.

More detailed images are available on request. The V5 is in my name.

Currently I own fifteen Studebakers and three Packards from 1933 to 1988 and have been playing with Studebakers in the three countries around the world, including North America for 38 years since I was 19.

It's time to thin down the collection a little and hence this interesting car is available.

I am also the Editor of the Studebaker Owners Club UK, so if you need any advice on Studebaker's I am always available.
