1995 Mercedes-Benz W124 E220 Estate 7-SeaterBrilliant Silver Metallic (744) with Black Fabric (001)The ultimate practical classic, the Mercedes-Benz W124 offers the cream in Stuttgart styling, combined with the lively 2.2 litre engine, auto box , wonderful specification and room enough for 7. There's a lot to like. What is it?The Mercedes W124 platform arrived in 1984, with the final saloons built in August 1995 and the very last estates following in June of 1996. This August 1995 Estate comes from the final year of production, destined for Japan with the typical Japanese characteristic of being a high specification car. What's it got?A Mercedes-Benz W124 estate makes a lot of sense for practical transport in any form, but the beautiful Brilliant Silver finish is more closely associated with the upmarket roadster in the form of the R129 SL. Insider there's an electrically adjustable steering column, roller blind  in the rear, illuminated vanity mirrors, folding armrest, air conditioning, electric windows all round, an outside temperature gauge, rear child seats, upgraded stereo system and passenger air bag - these options would have made this a reassuringly expensive car back in 1995.How does it drive?Fitted with the dependable M111 engine, the 2.2 litre petrol engine produces just shy of 150hp and was available from 1992. This engine feels spritely and responsive in the W124 Estate platform, offering a good combination of drivability and economy without feeling sluggish or underpowered. Whilst the market might lean towards the 3.2 litre petrol version, our pick would be the more frugal 2.2 litre thanks to lower running costs. Why this one?In recent years the Mercedes-Benz W124 has found it's place in the classic car world, following on from the huge rise in popularity that the W123 Estate has enjoyed. As prices for good quality W123s have rocketed, buyers have sought out high grade W124s and why not? The W124 offers a better range of engines, more safety, more equipment and a better drive that the W123 that it replaced. What it lacks in chrome and 70s styling it more than makes up for with it's beautifully simply lines and interior elegance.
