1984 Mercedes Benz SL500 500SL lovely condition great car

Hello and welcome to my auction!

Up for grabs is my lovely 1984 Mercedes Benz 500SL finished in white and in lovely condition throughout.

I am the 4th owner of this car and it benefits from an MOT until July 2022.

Below I will do my best to describe the car to the best of my knowledge and ability, however please accept that I am no mechanic and my opinion may differ to yours! I welcome and encourage any viewing or inspection so that you can make your own judgement. Should you decide to buy blind please do not expect any sympathy should the car not be what you expected. I will not haggle after the auction ends – the final price is the price you pay!

Paperwork and History

The car comes with good service history and plenty of stamps in the book – the latest one being at 96k. There is a whole host of old MOT's and receipts. Most notably for the new roof back in 2016!

V5 log book in my name and current MOT, for which £1000 of repairs were carried out.

The car comes with two keys.

Bodywork

The car is extremely straight and very presentable, however at 37 years old I'm sure we can forgive it for the few imperfections – namely a stone chip on the bonnet near the grille and a slight bubble of rust on the chrome rear bumper. There is some pitting on the chrome strip on the boot, but it's completely presentable and stands out well.

Interior

The interior is in near immaculate condition. The seats have been re-done and show no signs of wear. Carpets are in good order. The only negative points are a crack in the handbrake surround and a clip on the interior light behind the drivers sun visor is broken meaning that the light is hanging down slightly.

All gauges work as they should, the period radio works well (even operating the electric aerial!) and its a really nice and comfortable place to be.

The only thing not working is the analogue clock on the dashboard.

Engine and Gearbox

The 5.0 V8 engine starts first time every time. It is a pleasure to drive and I've covered some happy miles during my ownership. The automatic gearbox is smooth, kicks down as it should and is a pleasure.

The car does have a slight misfire. I've changed 6 out of the 8 plugs (anyone who has ever attempted to change plugs on these cars will know why I've given up!!) I've changed the distributor cap.

I'd recommend changing the other two plugs and leads next.

Air filter and oil changed recently too.

Aside from the misfire, the car is powerful and drives straight and true. The brakes work well and overall the car is a joy to drive.

I just don't have time to get it looked at.

Wheels and tyres

The alloy wheels are in excellent condition. The tyres are all in good order and hold air just fine, with plenty of life left in them.

The wheel nuts are quite pitted and changing these would improve the car tenfold.

Roof

The fabric roof was replaced in 2016 and therefore is in excellent condition. The rear screen is also in excellent condition with no misting or wear.

The tool to drop the roof is present and it folds away with ease.
