This is the small body first generation 250.   It also has the little chrome bumpers that are so well loved.   In addition to this. a Becker Europa was installed at the dealer or port.   Also. the carpet was just replaced and was done in the matching dark red.

I found this Mercedes outside of Portland where it was being stored in a Warehouse.   It was listed for sale along with lots of other items that were part of an estate.   I immediately liked the car.   When I saw the 4-Speed and the Becker. I couldn't say yes fast enough.   I called my favorite tow guy and got my mechanic prepped for a fun one.   I use Burback Motors in Portland. OR.   They are seriously good at vintage Mercedes wrenching.

The first thing that anyone must do with a car that has been sitting for years is remove and recondition the gas tank.   I got the mechanic going on that while I tried to figure out what to do with the brakes.   All the calipers were all frozen on their disks and unfortunately the only right way to correct this is with all new calipers.   Expensive. but worth it.   The mechanic found that the fuel pump was shot and the carbs were gummed up as well.   There was good news though. he checked the compression and found 150. 50. 50. 50. 50. 60!  So we got a fresh fuel pump coming and cleaned the carbs.

Once we completed all the work. we finally got a chance to start the car.   It fired right up and after a few minutes of sputtering. it smoothed out and ran like a champ.   No smoke or dripping oil or other surprises.   It ran just like I hoped it would.   The power steering leaked a bit from the filler cap. but other than that ALL GOOD!!  I jumped in and took it for a drive.   The clutch and transmission were excellent.   No chatter. no grinding. one inch of freeplay in the clutch.   As good as they get mechanically.   The tires are almost brand new and show no cracking from age.

Next. I took a hard look at the cosmetics of the 250.

The paint is almost totally original.   Thin in a few spots and there are some flaws. but it shines pretty darn good and a complete paint job might hurt the originality.   I decided to just leave it and wax it as best as I could and consider it a driver.

The interior was beautiful.   The seats and the dash are all perfect.   The carpet was worn and also the rear corners of the headliner were torn.   After discussions with my interior upholsterer we decided on a new carpet kit in red and to repair any other areas going with the “driver” theme.   It really turned out nice and I am pleased with the look.   Very Euro and Vintage too.

The Mercedes is a dry climate car. but there are a few bubbles of rust that will someday need attention.   The floorboards are solid but there are a couple of patches we saw when installing the carpet too.

All in all. this is a really nice little classic Mercedes.   Please keep in mind that it is 44 years old.   It has been refreshed. but not restored.   It is what I would call a survivor. meaning that it has survived all this time with no major overhauls or refinishing.   I am selling the car AS-IS.   I will be happy to show the car by appointment before the end of the auction.   The A/C does not blow cold.

I am more than happy to answer any and all questions so please ask them.
