Cunard body ex chassis 58CE Perfection is not often a word we use when describing cars. but this is as close as we have seen to it. 97AE has just undergone a complete & utter rebuild bringing the back to as close as the day it left the factory as possible. During a three and a half year period every single nut & bolt was stripped from the chassis & repainted. repaired and re-nickelled as appropriate to bring the car back to an "As New" standard.

According to a Flying Lady article by Andre Blaize. The car was owned by Kameshwar Singh. the 20th Raja of Darbhanga India. He says The body was a Landaulette by The Regent Carriage Company. In later years the body was removed & a Cunard body from Chassis 58CE was fitted in its place. The Cunard body has like the chassis had meticulous attention given to it with new ash frames being fabricated as required to bring it back to an as new standard. An open torpedo style tourer the body is long & low with a rakish appearance. The top of the windshield is unframed making for a pleasantly open feel to the driving experience. An Auster screen raises to the rear affording protection to the rear occupants. The engine is totally & utterly rebuilt from the sump upwards.

New high ratio pistons. new bearings. new timing gears. white metalling re-done etc etc. the gear box was totally dismantled and examined and various bearings replaced. similarly with the back axle and everything else. All nickel silver was re-done by Derby Plating. the instrument panel is made from the best American Black Walnut. there are six new tyres. the wiring is all new. the fuel lines are all new. there is an auxiliary fuel tank fitted giving a long range when touring. (the rear axle is 16/52 by the way a perfect combination for fast flexible driving). Pressure release valves were fitted in the system for safety if the car is left in especially hot heat. An electric fuel gauge is hidden in the leather side panels. the car has hidden indicators. there is also a hidden socket for electronic appliances. The hood and frame is new. there are three new tonneau covers. back section and two for the front joined together by a zip fastener. a new hood bag. plus new side screens.

There is a very valuable and complete Ghost tool kit in a correct leather roll. Obviously all the trimming is also new with the leather being top quality Bull hide (thicker and far better than the usual cow hide). The leather is in a fetching shade of Burgundy which contrasts beautifully with the deep grey paintwork & is to the absolute highest quality. The car won a prize at the 2012 RREC Concours in June this year plus the very prestigious Phoenix Award for the best restoration of 2012 from the 20-Ghost Club. the oldest Rolls-Royce Club in the world. The car only emerged from the restorers in June 2012 after a 3 1/2 years restoration and since then it has been over 5000 miles including to within 50km of the Russian border. The car. which is now nicely loosened up. has had no mechanical problems WHATSOEVER and in our view could be driven around the world immediately with no prior work required.

BH8112 was converted to a fire engine in the late 1930s for Borough Green Volunteer Fire Brigade. It seems the fire engine body was built by Bonallack's, Nursery Lane, Forest Gate, East London. I am researching this company. Peter Williams Forest Gate historian.
