1971 BMW 2002 Automatic

I have owned this car for 15 years and I always intended that it would be passed on within the family. I grew up with early BMWs and hoped that my son would take this on. He is now grown up and his interests lie in early Datsun's. I am only considering selling now as space is at a premium and I need to think about downsizing what has become a larger than anticipated collection.

This is what is recognised as a “Model 71” Automatic (as delineated by the mouldings and bumper style). It is believed to have been sold in Stow on the Wold by the one of the original BMW concessionaire in the UK, hence the Gloucestershire-specific “DFH” number plate prefix.

During my ownership virtually every aspect of the car has been rebuilt or renewed with the best of everything. It had a bare shell respray in the original Riviera blue in 2012. The front wings and front panel were replaced with genuine BMW panels. Every piece of chrome was replaced with genuine trim including grilles, headlights, bumper sections etc. All rubbers and seals renewed. Plated genuine fasteners. Factory decals sourced from BMW. Every cavity and the whole underside was coated in Bilt Hamber Dynax UB and Dynax S50 corrosion inhibitor. BMW still make and reproduce many parts for the '02 under their Mobile Tradition banner.

The current mileage is 88,200. Although the mileage is largely irrelevant given the work performed over the years.

The engine was rebuilt in 2015 by local specialist Malvern Rebore. This involved new oversize pistons sourced from Germany, reground crank with new bearings and a cylinder head sourced from Ian at Linwar Motors. All ancillaries were either replaced or reconditioned at this time. The gearbox was sent to a local specialist to be rebuilt and a new torque convertor sourced. Jaymic supplied many of the parts and arranged reconditioning of the carburettor and ancillary items. The fuel tank was repaired and lined. The brakes have been replaced throughout including lines, servos, wheel cylinders and brake calipers.

It has covered hardly any mileage in my ownership and has remained garaged and carcooned. There is no MOT requirement now and no road tax requirement.

Hundreds and hundreds of hours and many thousands of pounds have gone into making this what it is. This car will take you around Europe tomorrow. It needs very little apart from the usual routine maintenance and a few small jobs here and there. It is entirely standard apart from a few modern improvements such as an Alpine Hi-Fi system with CarPlay, period correct OEM wheels, electronic ignition, electric fan, Ireland Engineering roll bars and a Jaymic reproduction badge bar with spot lamps.

The car will come with -

a large paperwork file with receipts from Jaymic, Linwar, Walloth & Nesch – all the usual 2002 suppliers. Receipts for engine and transmission rebuildsphotos of the restoration work performed over the last 15 yearsTwo large crates of spares including a spare cylinder head, bolts, trim, rubbersHaynes manual, restoration manuals and old parts catalogues and reference guides

I have the V5 in my name and the car can be viewed under cover at my home address. No enquiries about part exchange please. I'm not particularly interested in offers.

I have many more photos available and am happy to communicate and answer questions via WhatsApp. My number is 07990 595999. Please no late night messages or offers though.
