This example reportedly only has 14,000 original miles on it and the overall condition is excellent! Nineteen seventy-nine marked the third consecutive year of General Motors' downsizing program and it was the E-body triplets' turn to go under the knife. The third-generation Toronado lost nearly 1,000 pounds and almost 16 inches in length. This car was made in General Motors' Linden, New Jersey factory (VIN code E) on March 29, 1979, and it was delivered to Whitney Oldsmobile-Cadillac in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. It left the assembly line with the following options – six-way power driver's seat; 55/45 split front bench seat; cruise control; tilt and telescoping steering column; and power antenna. The original owner, a David W., from Akron, Pennsylvania, took delivery of the car on April 7, 1979, with 28 miles on the clock. Finished in Black (code 19) with red pinstriping, the car's paint and trim are in overall very good order, with just minor blemishes visible at close range. The car's bodywork is straight and solid, the chrome bumpers with rubber trim retain their body-colored filler panels at both ends. The engine bay is very tidy, as is the cargo area. This Toronado rolls on Cooper Trendsetter white stripe radials, size 205/75R15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on a steel wheel topped with a factory wire wheel cover. The tires and wire wheels covers are all in very good order. Under that broad hood is Oldsmobile's 350 CID V-8 engine (VIN code R) with a four-barrel carburetor. Backing up this motor is a Turbo Hydramatic 325 three-speed automatic transmission and a 2.41:1 final drive. Driver convenience features included air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power locks, power front seats, tilt and telescopic steering column, electric trunk release and power antenna. Independent rear suspension (designed by Cadillac engineers) was adopted for the new car, which helped to increase usable rear-seat and trunk space in the smaller body, as well as improved handling over previous Toronados with no sacrifice in ride quality. Rear disc brakes were optional. This generation Toronado, along with its Riviera and Eldorado cousins, were the last body-on-frame, front wheel drive cars with longitudinally mounted V-8 engines. Inside, the Carmine Red cloth interior (code 74B) is in overall very good order. The front split bench is in overall excellent order while the matching carpet and headliner are in very good condition. The distinctive three-spoke steering wheel frames a dash awash in burled faux wood. The instrument panel and inner door panels are in overall very good order but the fuel gauge is inoperable. A column-mounted shift lever and a unique audio system combination complete the interior – an AM/FM stereo with an eight-track tape player and Delco GM five-band (60Hz – 10KHz) graphic equalizer and fader mounted under the dash. Competition to this Toronado in 1979 included BMW's 633CSi, Buick's Riviera, Cadillac's Eldorado, Chrysler's Cordoba, Lincoln's Continental and Continental Mark V, Mercedes-Benz's 450SL and Mercury's Grand Marquis. Documentation includes original owners' manual, original factory build sheet, original Delco GM radio guide, original consumer information, original maintenance schedule and more. If you're looking for a classic GM coupe that will allow you move ‘n groove to the Disco Era's best, this Toronado has the equipment to make that a reality. Otherwise, this is a fantastic survivor driver from a time when owning a Toronado was a statement to neighbors, friends and to yourself.
