1973 Volkswagen Beetle - Classic Super Beetle

For auction: 1973 Super Beetle (Type 1) with 21882 miles since restoration.

I purchased this vehicle in the summer of 2016 and have driven it as an antique tagged occasional runabout since then. The car is garage kept and runs great!

The car was restored a few years before I purchased it directly from the owner of VW Restorations and Customs, a privately owned LLC here in the northern Virginia area. The owner of Restorations and Customs has retired and the shop no longer operates but he restored many Volkwagens here in VA for many years in his shop in Manassas. The original owner of the car put the car back in his care in order to sell it as she was moving back to NY and he sold it to me.

Good:

Runs great

Garage kept

Driven regularly but not excessively

Clutch/trans great, great brakes

Beautiful dark green paint with clear coat

Great interior in tan with gray carpeting

Dashboard in great shape

Right and left hand rear view mirrors

Chrome rain guards over side windows

Aftermarket radio and CD player with kick board mounted speakers

Theft alarm!

Pop out rear windows

Emergency brake pulls up low and tight

All instruments / gauges work

No cracks in any glasswork / great weather seals

Sealed Interstate battery

Fast Fab Super Beetle Strut Brace (from aircooled dot net)

No holes in muffler or exhaust

Nice trunk carpeting

New (from 2016) carburetor, electronic distributor, ignition coil, plug wires

Tires are ok; Sears Guardsman in the rear and Euro's in the front (from last rotation); they are all the correct size for the car: 165SR-15s, good spare

My regular owner maintenance:

Every 3k miles: valve clearances, timing check, idle speed/dwell check, oil change (Amzoil 10-40 synthetic with zinc), check brake fluid level, tire pressure, belt tension

Every summer: New plugs, air filter, lube carb linkage, lube distributor, replace fuel filter, check vacuum advance, check coil resistance, tire rotation

Trans oil is a fresh replace/fill with Sta-Lube 85-90w GL-4 in the summer of 2019

Meh:

Small paint bubbling in the area over the passenger wheel where VW placed a filter sponge

Paint bubbles in a few other spots such as the rain rails, some under the passenger headlight, etc.

Horn blew loudly twice while testing for this listing (don't honk it often) but then went silent...seems like just a dirty connection

If you don't drive somewhat regularly, the alarm will drain the battery

Paint is great but not perfect and shows some aging in terms of mild scratches, some dings, etc. consistent with an older restoration

Chrome bumpers are ok but are replacement repos with light surface rust spots here and there

Some rust in the frame head area

Chrome tailpipes are cosmetically rusty and could (should!) be replaced with stainless steel ones

Cylinder #4 was apparently helicoiled sometime in the past and has a thread sleeve you must fit over a new spark plug when replacing the plug with a new one

Small sun crack in the upper dash (¾”?)

Headliner is great but was left original during the restoration so it looks -- original -- with some age spots, etc.

CD player: radio portion works but the CD player itself plays CDs inconsistently; a cleaning of the laser eye would likely do the trick

Exterior antenna came loose from it's grommet and needs to be either removed or reseated (car cover squished it to the side on a windy day)

Missing knob on passenger side to release the front seat forward
