1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Coupe
The storied Chevelle is one of those timeless designs that looks good no matter how it's built. Stock, modified, race, pro-touring, whatever; the clean lines and balanced stance on these tough classics create a confident swagger that's universally admired. That means, if you're looking to ride in style, you really can't go wrong with a Chevrolet A-Body. And when you factor in this ride's big block drivetrain, tastefully restored interior and first rate, all-American sheet metal, you get the picturesque profile of an incredible muscle car!
For consignment, the Chevrolet Chevelle SS Coupe. This car is designated an SS by the consigner and he states it is believed to be a true SS. Our decoder states that the drivetrain stamping is not believed to be original and warrants an inspection by a Chevelle expert.
ExteriorFor 1970, the face-lifted Chevelle moved an impressive 634K units. Not only did that high-profile success earn GM big money, it also solidified the nameplate as part of Chevy's oft romanticized 'golden era'. At the front of this coupe, a split grille hangs a prominent "SS" emblem in the horizontal chromed mid grille bar. Stainless-trimmed dual headlights are flanking on either side and are within white panels. Below is a nice and shiny bumper. Opposite that bumper, a domed Super Sport dual black racing wide striped hood leads the eye to fresh glass that's seated in original stainless frames. At the base of those frames, chrome door handles, a chrome driver's mirror and white-tinged "SS396" badges complement 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels. And at the back of the car, a second original shiny bumper, hangs a standard Super Sport inlay. All bathed in white respray and wide black stripes racing up the middle of the hood and trunk lid. Paint has areas of cracking and some small areas of underlying rust. The black stripes also show some sap fading damage peppering them.
InteriorIts correct combination of bench and bucket seats that are firm to the touch, encased in black vinyl, original belts, and high backs. On the headrest and seat of the driver's chair, a few slight cracks are revealing the interior foam. In front of those seats, a straight rally dash frames a trio of gauges inset into a black textured dash front. Below that dash, newer black carpet floats an original, center console that has a shifter that would make an airline pilot proud, and this is inside a correct console. Floor mats with white stitched SS 396 script badges are protecting the carpeting. At the sides of that carpet, door panels center classy stainless trim and requisite "SS" emblems on bright handles and supple, comfortable armrests. In front of the driver the steering wheel laps a black column. And behind the passengers, the car's fully restored trunk is finished with a correct jack and full-size spare tire all floating on a new vinyl trunk liner. Headliner is nice and tight and is also black, and where the shoulder belts hang.
DrivetrainGaze into the satin black engine bay and you'll find a circa 1969 396ci or 1970 thru 1972 402ci V8 all bedecked in orange/red GM paint. That block balances a polished and decaled open air cleaner on a 4-bbl carburetor. This feeds Chevrolet heads that are topped by chromed valve covers. A TH400 3-speed automatic transmission is strapped to the rear of the mill, and it pushes power rearward to a 12-bolt 3.73 posi consignor stated rear axle (a CCF stamping codes out as a 3.31 posi).
UndercarriageSome spotty surface rust is noted on the floor pans and bottom of the trunk deck. Invasive rust is delaminating the interior metal of the rockers. Independent coil springs upfront and 4 link with coil springs are on for the suspension, and power disc brakes for the front, and power drums for the rear. Dual exhaust with some heavier surface rust and Turbo mufflers are on and making their way rearward.
Drive-AbilityOur muscle car aficionado snapped up this test drive, and when he returned he reported nice acceleration, smooth shifting, good cornering and all the essentials were working swimmingly. Overall, it was a very happy motoring. We noticed that the rear defog has been removed but it does come with this car, as does new door cards, new hood insulation and the original AM/FM/8 track radio, and original water pump are coming along for the ride to your home.
1970's muscle alway brings smiles to faces, and this one with a few frowns still has everyone looking at it smiling. A fresh oil change, and some work over the years the consignor has owned it, along with a paper trail of receipts etc, show history of this car. Eat 'em up!
