The Jaguar E-Type was initially designed and shown to the public
as a grand tourer in two-seater coupé form and as a convertible
roadster. The 2+2 version. with a lengthened wheelbase. was
released several years later. The model was made in three
distinct versions which are now generally referred to as 'Series
I'. 'Series II' and 'Series III'. The Museum of Modern Art
recognised the significance of the Jaguar E-Type's design in 1996
by adding a blue roadster to its permanent design collection; one
of only two automobiles to receive the distinction. Open
headlights without glass covers. a wrap-around rear bumper. br/>re-positioned and larger front indicators and tail lights below the
bumpers. better cooling aided by an enlarged 'mouth' and twin
electric fans. together with up-rated brakes are all hallmarks of
Series II cars. The engine is easily identified visually by the
change from smooth polished cam covers to a more industrial
'ribbed' appearance. The interior and dashboard were also
re-designed. with rocker switches being substituted for toggle
switches. The dashboard switches also lost their symmetrical
layout. New. more comfortable seats were fitted and air
conditioning and power steering were available as factory
options.

The background to this good-looking example is interesting. It
was originally acquired in 1978 by the vendor as an alternative
family car to his Lagonda Rapide. It was thought that his wife and
two daughters would prefer a more user-friendly and reliable
motorcar. Some time was spent searching for the right one; it was
thought that a sound body was preferable to mechanics and so it
proved to be. This body is in excellent order throughout. sound and
corrosion free. Approximately 500 miles were driven in it before
the decision was made to begin a restoration. The externals were
looked after by Peter McCuloch at Bodytech; namely a full re-spray
in the original factory colour of red including new seals around
all the glass. boot and door openings. The engine was removed and
rebuilt then dynamically and statically balanced by Parisio
Engineering. The rear axle was also removed and rebuilt and
transmission checked for balance. The front suspension bushes have
all been renewed. Ancillaries have also not escaped the vendor's
eagle eye; a new exhaust. new chrome wire wheels and correct tyres
and a new battery have all been sourced and fitted. The cockpit
benefits from fresh seats utilising good quality new black leather
with a slightly smaller then normal. leather-bound. Moto Lita
steering wheel. As with many things. life got in the way and PHP
838G was dry-stored for the next 30 plus years until earlier this
year when it was decided to re-commission her. With some fresh
petrol. starting was immediate and a full MoT certificate has just
been issued. Apart from a handful of miles pre-restoration. this
represents a Series II E-Type that has had all major expenses
addressed. supplied with a completely corrosion-free tub and is
simply waiting for its next custodian to use it for the purpose for
which it was designed. Using that fabulous six-cylinder engine with
its triple S. U. 's and looking out over one of the most beautiful
bonnets on the planet.
