DESCRIPTION: 1972 Checker Marathon A-12. Drive it home!!!

YEAR: 1972

MAKE: Checker

MODEL: Marathon

VIN: A1228722416A

FOR SALE: 1972 Checker Marathon. This 4-door sedan is the “for public sale” version of the iconic taxi cab. This is an unrestored. highly reliable. daily driver. Please note that this is a bit of a project car. albeit a project car that is registered. insured. frequently used. and that you can drive home if desired. This car has been driven nearly every day for the last 2+ years. and I have few hesitations about taking it anywhere. I find it both comfortable and always a pleasure to drive. Be prepared. this classic car draws a lot of attention. It comes equipped with the optional GMC 350CID. 4-Bolt Main. V-8 engine. Additionally. it has a 3-speed Turbo 350 automatic transmission. Both the engine and transmission are original to the car.

Body wise. this is a northeast car and it shows both surface rust as well as some rot. That being said. this car weighs about 3700lbs and is made of heavy steel.  My view of the rust is that it's relative and slow moving. The body sits upon the original frame. Since I have owned the car. I have had the frame professionally repaired. so as to repair a few soft spots that had developed over the last 40 years. Both the shop and I inspected the frame at the time of repair and were satisfied that all potential trouble spots had been addressed. There do not appear to be any issues at this time.

Interior wise. this car is a bit rough. I had removed the door panels in order to replace the window tracks. At this time the mechanical windows still operate poorly and the door panels are still off. 2 sets of door panels will be included with the sale of this car. as well as all associated hardware that came with the car. Additionally. the rear seat has been reupholstered. the passenger rear door is stuck. and new seat belts have been installed for the front seat.

This car has its original powertrain. Oil changes and lube jobs are done at regular intervals. The engine uses full synthetic oil. Also. full tune-ups have been performed yearly. There does not appear to be any power loss either with the engine or any slippage within the transmission. The engine was originally designed to run on leaded gas. but was rebuilt in order to operate using unleaded gasoline. A new carburetor was installed about 2 years ago.

Some additional things to note:  Since this car has been used daily. repairs have been made on a rolling basis. in order to maintain daily operation. Larger repairs have turned into extended projects. Nearly all of the mileage for the last couple of years have been highway mileage. The brakes were repaired just prior to my purchase of the car. The four tires have approximately 50% tread left. I have had the exhaust system repaired. the car body painted. the carburetor replaced. the rear seat reupholstered. and the frame repaired. The sale of this car will include both N. O. S. and aftermarket spare parts specific for this car. Including: N. O. S. Checker body emblems. interior and exterior lights. door and window parts. a spare rear seat cushion. 2 sets of door panels. door hinges. a new glove box. and miscellaneous additional parts.

If interested. test drives may be available during the weekend.

CHECKER HISTORY:

Checker Motor Co. produced this vehicle between 1959 and 1982. in Kalamazoo MI. A majority of the cars they built were taxis. However. a few of them were sold to the public each year.

These cars were designed and built specifically for use as a taxi. using heavy-duty parts that could be easily procured. Essentially. the difference between the taxis and the “public sale” versions. were minor trim options.
