Pre-production, press launch MGF 1.8 petrol

A rare opportunity to own a truly important part of MG history.

N807SVC is a pre-production prototype MGF with VIN 89 - by comparison MGF ‘Number One' at the British Motor Museum is a much later vehicle with VIN 205.

Built as a batch of early prototype vehicles many months before the launch, 807 was sent to the press fleet for use in marketing and publicity.  She remained with the MG factory for three years and then sold directly to the chief executive of the MG Car Club who used her extensively in his role promoting the brand.  In 2012 807 was sold to the Southern President of the MG Car Club, from whom I bought her last year.

807 had been unused but in dry storage for several years when I acquired her. In preparation for a summer of MGF 25th anniversary celebrations she received a thorough mechanical overhaul and a fresh MOT.  Works include: clutch, cam-belt and tensioner, water pump, full engine service, new front brake discs and callipers, 4 new suspension ball joints, new coolant hoses, new stainless steel coolant pipes, electric window motor and regulator.  The head gasket was replaced by the previous owner (with large receipt filed in the service history).

She has a comprehensive documented service history from new and all handbooks, stamped service book etc.

All in all a truly remarkable survivor with fabulous provenance.

She drives beautifully.  My wife and I throughly enjoyed 200 miles driving in a day on the 25th Anniversary heritage run retracing the press test route with the MGF register.   We have also enjoyed taking her to local classic car shows including the Festival of the Unexceptional.

She is in original condition and still wears the factory-made registration plates from when she was sold out of the company.  Her bodyshell is unwelded and original with some paint defects and blistering as to be expected from an unrestored car. Her soft top fabric is excellent though the plastic rear window has degraded.  Going forward she will need a new exhaust at the next MOT - the current exhaust is a Unipart item dated 1997 which is mostly airtight but crispy at the edges.  Tyres are all have excellent tread.

A perfect candidate for a concourse restoration or could be used as-is for some time to come.

This historically-important vehicle deserves a very good home with a committed enthusiast who will continue her preservation.
