For those of you who cannot bear the tension of waiting for an auction to end, only to find you're pipped at the post by some spoilt smart ass with unlimited funds ☺ here is a recently imported South African 1600 Sport, virtually complete and at a sensible Buy It Now Price.Be under no illusions, plenty of work to do here, no doubt, but you've got the 1600 Crossflow (removed & in the boot) together with quite a few ancillaries - manifolds, carburettor, alternator etc. Gearbox still in situ together with propshaft. There is even the radiator there, plus all that's left in the engine bay; steering rack, servo, fusebox, loom etc. I cannot vouch for the condition of any of these parts. The interior of the car is also largely there. Front seats are non-original as is probably the rear. But you've got door cards albeit holed for speakers and generally grotty and even door handles & window winders to a lesser or greater extent. Dash is there, some parts spoilt by some hideous "blueing" going on including the clocks (ask me nicely, I might chuck you in some replacement sport clocks ☺) Also "carpet" covered dash top doesn't make for a good look. But even glovebox lid & centre console is there. Roof lining present but I noticed at least one slit. Not a train smash though. Ignition switch and key present. I would say carpet could be the original.Right, lets get down to the nitty gritty here and that is the condition of the bodywork: Well there's plenty to do but it could be worse. As I've said before viewing is king in these situations so my observations here are not those of a professional, just someone trying to sell you the car ☺The engine bay is pretty square with a reasonable front/slam panel which houses the interior bonnet pull cable (still working) and also both the build tag (states 1600 Sport) & the VIN Tag. The shell is the South African spec heavy duty type so consequently reinforced shock-towers as can be seen. Generally inner wings are sound as are chassis rails beneath. Left-hand inner wing has 50p sized hole at top above battery tray, not sure how it has occurred but it is only localised and not necessarily down to corrosion. Bonnet is split at least on one edge as they tend to do. Also small localised (repairable?) corrosion on front edge. The bulkhead, particularly the upper part is good and only succumbs to corrosion as it slopes away underneath to meet the footwells. As you can see, the transmission tunnel appears largely unmodified. The heater bubble has rust and would need a replacement welding in. Above there, the scuttle at the base of the windscreen is good. The screen itself is cracked and will need replacing. All other glass present & correct. Underneath the seating area of the car, the driver and passenger footwells would need replacing and the lower bulkhead making good to effect a good join. Door jambs appear good. Door catches/mechanisms need attention. Doors themselves have corrosion along the bottom but may be able to be re-skinned. The inner sills where floor meets them will need repairs/replacement as will outer sills. Generally chassis rails seem ok as does the floor inward of them. This applies all the way back to the rear spring hangers. From inside the boot, the middle of the boot floor has a split but the (inner) tubs and suspension mounts look good. Even the base of the driver's side rear wing looks sound. Passenger side spare wheel well though will need a repair section at base. You may have noticed that this car has the uk spec fuel tank in the rear wing which is a plus.Generally, the rear panel and boot frame areas are sound although the boot itself has a fair dent which I would think is repairable. At the base of the C posts (sloping back roof) has gone particularly on the left-hand side where it meets the rear wing. This is a common area and will need a repair. As you can see, on the same side the rear wheel arch is bad and will need a repair section. As a general comment I would say both rear quarters will repair. The corresponding C post area on the right-hand side shows what seems to be just surface rust but there is evidence of previous filler repairs.Conclusion. A car in need of full restoration but a lot to be said for something that is more or less complete. Vehicle can be viewed at a mutually convenient time.
