Welcome to the sale of my beloved 1995 R129 Mercedes-Benz SL 500 in Tourmaline Green (paint code 6269) only made for 3 years of the 12 year R129 production, I believe. Very rare spec, complimented by cream/mushroom interior, with 120,000 miles on the clock. FSH with 24 stamps in the book. Properly looked after, every stamp done on the dot, pre-inspection there, MBZ dealer stamps for many years.

I'm very particular about my cars and I like things to be right in every aspect if possible. I've put a lot of money in to this car to ensure it's as great as a can be.

So when I purchased the car it was mechanically excellent, as you'll see below. But the first thing I wanted to do, even though it had been checked and was fine at that time, was to send the wiring loom away to be re-built to a better quality than before. At the time this cost me £700 in total including fitting. I wanted to know that for future motoring I had nothing to worry about and could enjoy the car to its full potential. If you know your R129's, you'll know that it's vital that this has been done.

Secondly, knowing now that the car was ready to use and enjoy and I could put aside the mechanical side of things, I set about restoring that beautiful tourmaline green paintwork. There were a few panels where there was scratches, flat paint, stone chips etc so I decided on a full respray (other than the hardtop as this only required flatting and polishing) this cost me £4000, as was done to a very high standard. You have to see the car now to appreciate it, the finish is stunning.

I decided along with the respray to go for the SL60 AMG look. Almost a tribute car if you will. I also had the door handles colour coded and the lower body finished in the same gloss finish as the top half. Then I moved on to ordering more parts. First was the AMG pre merger style Ducktail that I ordered from the US, to the specification of my car and colour. It was then professionally bonded on so it wouldn't lift over time. This cost a further £750 in total. It is exactly the same as the real item. Sadly, finding and original in good condition is incredibly difficult.

Then on to the most important part, the infamous three piece split rim wheels. Now i deliberated over this for quite a while, and having owned an original set in the past, I knew they can be a nightmare to maintain. As they're old, they can split and crack out of the blue, they corrode unless constantly cleaned and wrapped in cotton wool, under a heated garage, and you wouldn't want to use them in anything else other than warm conditions. So I set about seeing if there were such things as modern day replicas.

Luckily enough I came across a set for sale in the Middle East. They looked exactly the same, but weren't a split rim (so none of the drawbacks) also built to a higher standard as well, because of modern materials etc, and above all, much cheaper, also being brand new. So I did my homework and made sure I wouldn't be disappointed etc, and purchased them. I have to say that above everything I've purchased for the car, these have been the Best Buy. They look identical, are made properly, and the fitment is spot on!

Once arrived I had the centres painted to match the body, which I think really sets the car off perfectly. Then wrapped them with some fresh rubber, going for Continental's all around, as Mercedes-Benz recommended. The tyre sizes were a tricky one but after doing much research, I settled on 255/45/17's at the back, and 225/45/17's at the front. No spacers needed. I hope you agree that this is the perfect look for those wheels and accurate to the SL60 AMG. But of course I couldn't do all that and then leave it sitting at its original ride height. So I bought some H&R springs front and rear, costing around £200 + Labour, and had them fitted. It now sits perfectly imo, and more importantly, hasn't effected the smooth ride in anyway.

Last but not least I thought the car deserved a bit more of a V8 rumble, and warranted some of those beautiful square pipes from the early- mid 90s AMG cars. So I had made a full stainless steel exhaust fitted with the AMG style square pipes, to fit the car perfectly. At a further cost of £550. The car now has that V8 rumble, but is also perfectly quiet when cruising, until you tickle the throttle and it then burbles like it should.

Ex MB Club member car.  2 keys. The best engine M119 and the strongest gearbox - 4sp.  Traction control. electric / heated memory seats x 2, Ice Cold A/C, cruise (all working as they should)

It's had some niggles In the past with emissions but that has been rectified now. Was caused by some damp in the distributor caps (known issue with R129's) the revs were bouncing but this has now been fixed.

The interior looks like it's done a third of the mileage, and the car feels like it also. No squeaks, rattles, or unwanted noises. These cars live on forever and half a million miles isn't unheard of.

Electric roof works perfectly, hardtop in fab condition. Thick files of work done over the years and every MOT and original MB receipt.

Some negatives to point out -

Few little scuffs on the hardtop, but not that noticeable

the boot lid spring prevents it from closing softly like it should, but doesn't effect the use of it, as it stays up when using the boot. Door rubs on dash so sometimes squeaks when driving, but have put something in place to prevent this, which can be removed if need be. the mesh vents down the side of car have cracked a little in places mirrors are a little marked but still in excellent conditionPositives -
