Perhaps more than any other automaker. Chrysler seemed to allow its customers greater freedom to create exactly the car they wanted. This is probably why today there are so many unusual Mopars running around. You can often spot the special-orders. they tend to focus on one aspect to the exclusion of everything else: all-out performance. luxury. or a unique color combination. This very cool 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T convertible seems to fall into the performance category. but nobody can deny that a Burnt Orange convertible is unusual. Packing a matching-numbers 440 Magnum. a quality restoration by a Mopar expert. and a lengthy options list. this one could rightfully be called investment grade. but I’m guessing you’ll have too much fun driving it to banish it to the back of a trailer. Here’s the fender tag decode. and you can see that there are quite a few performance-oriented options:JS27:Dodge ChallengerSpecial. R/TConvertibleU0B: 440 1x4 barrel 8 cylinder engine1970Dodge Main. The Challengers. while initially appearing identical to the ‘Cudas. are actually quite different. and the two share very few exterior pieces. This one hails from sunny California. and has had a recent. high-quality restoration that makes it an ideal car to drive or show. Panel gaps are decent all around. and with that nose to tail white stripe. there’s nowhere for poorly-aligned panels to hide. The finish is two-stage urethane. which gives the Burnt Orange a depth and sparkle that it never had in 1970. and it’s dazzling in the sunlight. This one also sports a correct R/T grille. hood pins. and great chrome all around. including the optional luggage rack on the rear deck. Perhaps even more unusual than the body color is the matching Burnt Orange interior. which is far less common than. say. white or black. With correct materials and patterns used throughout. the interior is spectacularly restored. The high-back buckets have new foam underneath. so they’re firm and supportive. and the seat covers don’t sag like you see on cars with tired original foam. The dash is full of rebuilt Rally gauges. which includes a tachometer and a clock. all arrayed ahead of the driver in an easy-to-read fashion. The center console is a must-have on these cars. angled towards the driver to create more of a cockpit feel. With a new dash pad that matches the door panels. a woodgrained steering wheel. and the original Music Master AM radio in the dash. this Challenger is ready to cruise. And if by some chance the weather turns on you. there’s a white convertible top overhead that seals up tightly thanks to recent weather stripping. Big block power is standard with an R/T. and this one packs 440 cubic inches of Magnum V8 under the sport hood. With 375 horsepower. it’s scary fast inside the relatively light Challenger body. and has been detailed for show. There’s Hemi Orange paint on the block and heads. although the restorer. as an expert. was careful to leave the stamping pad visible so you can easily verify this engine’s matching numbers status. The twin-snorkel wrinkle finish air cleaner wears correct Magnum 440 decals and items like the hoses and clamps. heat riser. and plug wires are correct reproduction pieces. Underneath. there’s the original 727 TorqueFlite transmission driving an 8. 75-inch rear with 3. 55 gears. The floors have been undercoated the way the factory would have done it (if anything. it’s too nice). and yes. they are the original floors—none of the sheetmetal has been replaced. The fresh dual exhaust system is an accurate reproduction piece. right down to the chrome tips poking through the rear valence. It rolls on a set of beautifully finished 14-inch Rallye wheels wearing 235/60/14 BFGoodrich T/A radials. the only significant deviation from stock specifications on the entire car. With just test mileage since the restoration was complete. this is an exceptionally clean. well-sorted car that’s ready to enjoy. There’s a thick book full of restoration photos and receipts. documenting the entire process and proving that this is a very clean. rust-free example. Highly unusual. this Burnt Orange R/T is as fast as it is beautiful. and with a matching numbers big block. it is an investment-grade piece that has been restored accurately. If your collection is short on E-body big blocks. this one is nicer than most. and its highly unusual configuration will make it the star of any show it attends. Call today!
