1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C Alloy Body

# CSX  4226

This is an authentic Shelby America continuation. all alloy Cobra.   These car were produced by Shelby himself for clients that wanted to have the opportunity to own a REAL Shelby. due to the fact that the original 53 427 Cobra's built for competition have become some of the most sought after and expensive collector cars on the planet.   Original 427 S/C Cobra's have traded hands over 2. 4 million dollars and are commonly valued at 1. 7-1. 9 million dollars.   These all Alloy bodied cars were a wild modification from the first AC bodied 289 Cobra's.   It took a lot of work from Shelby to fit the large FE Ford Big Block into the little Shelby. along with the extra wide fender flares and wide tires. this was going to be the next FIA race winner.   The 427 S/C was cut short because not enough cars could be built and homologated to meet the standards.    Due to this fact. production ceased at 53. making them exceedingly rare and valuable.

Carroll Shelby recognized how desirable these cars were becoming. so in order to combat all the replicas. he started building the 4000 and 6000 series cars for clients in the 1980's.   The first 4000 series cars were hand formed original bodies. said to be left over's from the first production run that was not completed.   Later more bodies were hand built from aluminum to a very high standard. The cars were custom ordered and could be optioned with different components depending on what the client wanted.  There also was a fiberglass version offered by Shelby. These are not nearly as valuable as the aluminum bodied cars cost an additional $70k. This car comes with copies of the original MSO signed by Carroll Shelby. along with stamped dash plaque with its 4226 chassis number.   The car was originally built for a James Neurman according to the script.

The original Shelby 427 FE powered Cobra's were some of the fastest cars built in the day.   With 0-60 in under 4 seconds and ¼ mile times in the twelve's.   These cars were rated at 400 hp.   Chassis number #4226 has a period correct Ford high performance side oiler block and special Ford Racing heads that were built for IMSA and Trans AM racing. with a matched Ford Racing intake manifold. These heads were from a limited run by Ford of 50 sets.   They were designated for GT40 MKII. and the Cobra racing program.   They are a special medium rise alloy head.  Please see the SK numbered head photos (SK 35369).   While I had these out for a rebuild. we had several offers and inquiries about just these heads because they are so rare.   We just had the engine completely rebuilt by Paolo Engine Service.   The intake manifold is a Sidewinder alloy Ford racing part.   Paolo's is very well known for his expertise in Ford FE engines.   This engine is fully rebuilt top to bottom.   It received everything of the best quality inside.   Eagle H-Beam Rods. Comp Cam (#33-781-9). Diamond Pistons. Smith push rods. all new valves and seats. Steel Crank. Manley springs. and all new quality gaskets and bearings.

We decided to pull the engine and drive train out of this car to detail it and seal any leaks. While the motor was removed. it became apparent that the motor had gotten hot at some point in time. hence the rebuild with such low miles.   We resealed the transmission and rear end while it was out and. replaced/updated the fuel system to correct specifications.   All fluids were changed. and all hardware was inspected.    After this was completed we broke in the car on the chassis dyno at Loyning's engine service. and dialed in the carburetor jetting and timing.    It has about an hour of run time on it total.   I can tell you that it runs flawlessly and has the most usable power band of any of these I have driven.   I have driven a few of these cars. and this one is easy to drive. but has tons of raw torque and power when needed.

The car sits on correct Good Year bias ply sports car special racing tires.   These are the tires it was delivered with when it was completed.   If you are going to show the car. these are great. but for drives or rallies more modern tires would be suggested.

The interior of the Shelby is as built with all the upgraded optional items for gauges as well as leather seats and beautiful wooden steering wheel. The side exit exhaust is a slip-fit racing style and has an impressive sound and resonation to it. people will surely notice.

The body and paint is flawless with no chips or scratches.   It has been hand polished and sealed to an optimum luster.   It is truly a show car. which can be driven or added to a fine collection.

If you contacted Shelby America to purchase a CSX 4000 series chassis as a roller. they charge over $140k not including the engine and transmission.   In addition. it takes close to a year to build and complete. and would not have a Carroll Shelby signature. since he has passed away.   The Shelby Cobra will always be on any collectors bucket list.
