A TRUE BARN FIND 190SL

This is one of the most original 190 SL we have ever seen.

The last owner purchased the car on December 29 1963 from Mercedes Benz of Hollywood in Los Angeles for the hefty sum of $2. 94. -. That was 50 years ago.

Several years ago the original owner passed away. His children did not want to part with the car. Just recently after a careful consideration they decided to let go of it.

The original issued black plates with their dealer frames are still on the car. as they were in 1963. The last sticker was put on in 1978. There are a few more from the following years but they were never put on the license plate. We assume he stopped driving it at that time. All these years the car was stored in a garage. ducked away under - a cover as you can see on the last pictures.

Of course we had to invest quite some money to make the car road worthy again after sitting for such a long time.
It was completely steam cleaned and detailed what revealed a beautiful untouched floor pan and wheel well area.
No signs of any accidents or heavy rust. Just a light layer of surface rust which is to be expected. The paint came back alive and even most of the chrome is shining again.

Of course there are some dents. dings and small paint faults but as you can see from the photos. she is very presentable for an original 190SL.

We measured the paint it with a special electronic device and it confirmed that most of it was original. It must have had a few touch up spots but overall it is truly original.

The tires were pretty sad looking and we had to replace them with new ones. The original spare tire by Firestone-Phoenix in the trunk.

Original leather seats are showing signs of age but there are no rips or perforations. just the right amount of patina. The same goes for the door panels. dash and even the center console rubber mat is original. Both floor mats had to be replaced as the originals crumbled away.

Now the most amazing thing is that she still wears the original soft-top. It actually is in very decent condition considering it is over 50 years old.

Engine sounds fantastic and she is a pleasure to drive.
The front brakes will need some attention soon as the car pulls slightly to the side.

Jack. tool kit. boot cover and sun visors are in the trunk. Both original rubber trunk mats are in remarkable good condition. There are also some old registration cards including the last one which was mounted on the steering column in a protective cover.

The spare rim is dated 3-59.

After driving the car we are also very sure that the mileage of 68. 39 must be original to the car. We ordered the data card from Mercedes Benz of North America and all numbers are confirmed and matching - including engine. The tile is still the original small pink slip from 1963.

 

We truly think this might be one of the most original untouched 190SL's left in the world.
