1965Gilbern GT 1800. silver with red interior. full MOT and historic free road tax.

The first Gilbern GT was started in 1959. Giles Smith the local butcher living in Church Village near Pontypridd South Wales had decided that he wanted a glass fibre special as were common in the 1950s. Through a chance meeting with Bernard Friese. he discussed the possibility of building a one off car. Bernard was a German ex POW who had stayed on in Kent and married after the war. For a time Bernard had been working for a glass fibre company that had produced a special called the Martin. Initially Bernard had attempted to dissuade Giles from buying or building any of the current specials then on the market. however they decided to build a car from scratch. Then as the car was nearing completion. the well known local amateur racing driverPeter Cottrell was asked to come to view and inspect the car. It was realised that the car was to good to be simply a one off. and it was decided that there was a potential market for the new Gilbern GT.

The first models were sold in 1960 powered by Austin Healey Sprite or Coventry Climax FWA engine. although it is unlikely that any of these still exist. Rear suspension was a live axle mounted on twin trailing arms with coil springs and telescopic dampers. an arrangement that became standard on all models. The chassis is of multi-tubular construction forming a full floor pan. Components came initially from the A35. later changing to Morris Minor 1000.

First announced in 1962 was the MGA powered version. followed at the 1963 Motor Racing Show by the MGB 1800 cc version.
The most commonly surviving version today. the GT1800. used MGB mechanicals. front suspension and rear axle. The first built also used original 3 bearing crank engine but later in 1963. as with the MGB. this was changed to the more reliable 5 bearing crank. Some of the last cars were built with the then new Ford V4 (those with chassis numbers start C) but this was not a successful installation and it is unlikely that any remain with this installation.

Total production of the Gilbern GT was approximately 200 with less than 50 remaining today. making this a rare car!

I have a full history file from date of first registration to present day. including period photographs showing the car together with magazine literature and service receipts.

Briefly;

The car was the subject of a body-off restoration in 1980/81 and a new chassis was commissioned. The bodywork colour was changed from the original ‘metallic grey' (silver) to white.

The engine was removed and rebuilt in 1991 and a suspension overhaul carried out.

The car was then used for historic motorsport events during the 90's (mostly classic tours and club rallies) by an enthusiastic young owner!

I purchased the car in 1999 and returned the bodywork colour back to the original silver. A full restoration of the interior was carried out to include new dashboard. headlining. carpets and renovation of the original ‘Restall' reclining front seats.

2013 the bodywork was stripped to bare gelcoat and professionally resprayed in silver.

The car is now in first class condition. drives beautifully and must surely be the best GT available.

Please don't hesitate to contact me for more information.

Hello,
Is this car still for sale?
I'm located in France and I would like to get more information before to confirm my interest :
1) What is the price you ideally wish for this car?
2) Is the car fitted with its original MGB engine --> Is it a 3 crankshaft bearings engine or 5 bearings.
3) Is the car fitted with overdrive.
Thank you very much in advance for your answer.
Kind regards.
Vincent.
