An Authentic 1960s Custom & Street Legal Show Car!

Unique Opportunity for Mobil Promotions or Advertising Campaign

This amazing two-headed Bug was built as a labor of love by a serious car collectorwho owned an import car parts business. Created in the 1960s. we're told by the owner's son that he used two low-mileage cars of like vintage. The car was built to be fully-functional. street-legal and to be driven. It was titled and registered for the road here in Minnesota. and driven for many summers. The car was last registered in 1981. after which time it was carefully stored.

In the early 2000s. the owner had his team begin an extensive restoration. Sadly. he passed away before it could be completed and his project sat for many years. covered and protected in a heated building. Receipts from October 2000 total over $7000 in parts and labor. The engine rebuild was thorough and included new pistons. oil pump. valves. valve guides. main bearings and much more. The carb was rebuilt at the same time. and a complete new exhaust system installed. The brakes were rebuilt with new master and wheel cylinders. brake lines. and cables for both the handbrake and brake and clutch. New paint in gorgeous emerald green was chosen (a Ford color – easy to match for touch-ups).

After sitting untouched for over a decade. the car has recently been dusted off and gotten running again with a new battery. new fuel-pump. fresh fuel. and fresh oil. The engine fired up smoothly first shot. without drama. Even the brake system still works (amazing after such long storage). although we would recommend bleeding and flushing the system with fresh brake fluid. Overall. we were surprised at just how good the car cleaned up and ran after not being driven in over twenty years. The rebuilt engine snaps to life and sounds strong and healthy. We haven't done a lot of miles in it (this car is NOT currently registered). but around the neighborhood. it runs just great: Goes. steers and stops pretty much like any other classic Beetle.

For eBay's information template. we used the odometer reading from the "dominant half" of the car (the front!). We have no way of knowing how many miles the car has actually travelled. but general condition of the vehicle and the nature of its construction and use would seem to indicate that the mileage is quite low.

The car still requires the finishing touches and detail work that the owner never got to complete. Small things need attention. The horn and gas gauge aren't working (these are probably bad grounds from sitting. and we will make an attempt to have them operating for the new owner). The handbrake is not working. Seatbelts and new windshields should be installed for safety. The tires have new tread depth. but have cracks from age and should be replaced soon. Prudence would suggest that the car is not road-ready for a long trip. so we suggest trailering it home. Appearance wise. the paint has some drip spots and places that could use minor touch-ups. and (under certain lighting conditions) some foggy spots on portions of the clear coat…All the same. it is a glossy and very pretty finish that presents quite well. New fabric for the sunroof. new floor coverings. headliner trim. door seals and some other detailing would make it look sensational inside and out. This car still requires some finishing and finessing to be its best again. but for sure the hard parts have already been done.

Okay. so there are two “driver's seats” with two steering wheels and two gear shifts! (The “rear” steering wheel and shifter move. but are inoperative). The number of tricks one can play in front of a crowd is incalculable. especially with a pilot in each driver's seat facing different directions! This car was built strictly for fun. but the build-quality is not a joke: The welding joining the two halves of the body is invisible from outside the car.  With the exception of the stock air cleaner (we're using a screen “strainer" over the carb). the engine fits beautifully under the stock trunk lid. and it looks natural there. Indeed. if anything. access to the engine looks better than under the normal hood! The floor pan is neatly welded in the center. using two front halves. with the seats are bolted into the factory positions in the floors The rear floor was adapted to accommodate the drivetrain with (among other details) a tunnel welded-in to clear the transmission. There are additional supports for the “rear” body work from a strong and simple sub-frame made of square-section steel tubes. The car is full of superb attention to detail and clever solutions. like the red bulbs (stop lights and tail lights) installed in European Lucas headlamps in the rear (in place of usual clear sealed-beam headlamps)…Until they're illuminated. they look just like stock headlights. completing the two-faced illusion. The only real hint as to which end is which are the four chromed pea-shooter exhausts exiting beneath the rear bumper (which many a passer-by has likened to “machine guns”!!!)

The body is clean and straight. and panel fit is very good. All four doors open without a snag. and shut with a nice German “thunk”. The car is (by any sane measure) rust free. Underneath. the corners. seams and crevices that usually invite rot look impressively clean. The chassis does not sag at all (always a concern in a “stretch”). and the car can be jacked up on any corner and the four doors will still open and shut perfectly: The structure is SOLID! Welding quality is neat and strong. This was not a home-built butcher job. It was fabricated by professionals. and the next owner won't uncover any horror stories.

Mysteries abound. however. The car is titled as a 1965 Volkswagen. yet it has a 1964 VIN. Which is it? Sharp-eyed Bug buffs will know that the last cloth sunroof models were made in 1963. To get more arcane. this vent window style was last used in '64. the white steering wheel with horn ring was last used in '63. the turn signals on the fenders are also '63 and earlier. The engine# of 7910447 is a 1964 block; a 1200cc model rebuilt with new 36hp pistons. So what year is this car? For legal purposes. it's a “1965”. and for practical and historical purposes. it's “two or more 1963 or '64 Bugs”.

This car is second-to-none at gathering attention. People follow wherever it drives. You could park it at a Ferrari concorso be the central attraction. Every age group finds it irresistible. and it seems to turn everyone into an extrovert: Guys want to know how it works. ladies want to hug it. and kids think it's like a big toy. Everybody wants to take it home. It just makes people feel happy! The classic Beetle design is recognized universally around the world; its iconic image is associated with nostalgia. fashion. ageless style. and fun…All of which makes it a perfect parade car or mobile advertisement for business.

Some sample slogans for fictitious businesses:

Bugs don't know which way to run from Bob's Exterminating!

You can go “both ways” at Bob's Bar!

“You push. I pull!” -- Roberta the Midwife
