Lucky number “13” is an early example of the rare “change-over” or “carry-over” cars. A mere 252 of the “change-over” cars were produced. These 252 cars have 1965 Ford serial numbers and 1966 Shelby serial numbers. #13 has all of the features of the 1965 car including; over axle traction bars. side exit exhaust. rear seat delete. Cobra oil cooler. R model roll bar. functional side scoops. fiberglass hood and limiting cables on the suspension. Many of those features were phased out in 1966 when Ford made the car more “marketable” by softening up the suspension. making it quieter and reducing production costs.
This car is also equipped with an R-valance. rear race window and correct. Paxton supercharger. The Paxton was built for Shelby American. with a “C” serial number and February 1966 build date. The Paxton is cooled by an external cooler. The original Paxton addition was done by Hall of Fame drag racer. Al “The Lawman” Eckstrand.
UNIQUE HISTORY
#13 was last resided in the collection of Hall of Fame drag racer. Al Eckstrand. In addition to his Lawman Racing Team. Al is known for his time in Vietnam with his Ford sponsored. Lawman. Boss 429 dragster. Al promoted driver safety to our military members and inspired a young Vietnamese boy. Hau Thai-Tang to pursue the American Dream and work for Ford. Tang became Ford's chief engineer for the 2005 Mustang and thanked Al for his inspiration by presenting his with a special Lawman Mustang in 2006.
ENGINE
The engine is a non VIN stamped HiPo engine. It was built by T&D HiPo Motors. I have never been inside the engine but believe it has a mild cam and other performance enhancements (I posted a photo of the billet aluminum. roller rockers. in the Facebook album. linked to the auction). Tony has a excellent reputation as an engine builder and this one performs very well. I don't have the exact engine mileage but. from the history binder you can narrow it down. It has a minimum of 8. 58 and a maximum of 14. 00 miles.
TRANSMISSION
The transmission is a Top Loader C8AR 7006-D W1.
CLUTCH
When I had the transmission rebuilt. I upgraded the clutch to a Center Force racing clutch. The stock clutch was inadequate for the horsepower.
SHEET METAL
The inside front fenders are VIN stamped. The passenger side has the Shelby VIN stamp and the driver side has the Ford VIN stamp. The history binder indicates that the floors and left. front quarter panel were replaced
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
#13 was shipped from Shelby American with Kelsey Hayes steel wheels and no Lemans stripes. It was shipped to Trudell Ford in Warren. MI. No dealer invoice has ever been discovered so it is impossible to say how the dealer equipped the car. Trudell was a prominent Shelby and Cobra dealer. Following is a link to #38's auction: www. youtube. com/watch?v=D5SUfZgr5bc #38 was also purchased from Trudell.
SUPERCHARGER
The Paxton was added after delivery. There were Paxtons made for Shelby American and sold over-the-counter. This is one of them. They have a “C” beginning the serial number and they are date coded. This Paxton has a February. 1966 build date. According to a 1997 Shelby registry article. Shelby claimed a 46% horsepower increase. Various road tests put the peak horsepower between 390 and 400.
