AZ Authentic 1964 GTO  4 Speed Tripower Convertible

Overview

Beautiful. well optioned and restored Genuine. PHS documented 1964 GTO Convertible. AZ/ CA/TX 27 year Past Owner history file including photos and receipts. Once  a featured GTO Enthusiast magazine car. and  multiple trophy award show winner including the GTO Regionals in California that involved judging. (As documented by written owner presentations on file)

Totally and professionally restored twice to GTO specs by restoration shops specializing in GTOs. and just refreshed again this year. The entire body. chassis. glass and interior are all exemplary of a long lived. dry Southwest existence. Yes. at very close inspection. a few very small paint chips. and I do mean a FEW. that have been touched up nicely since the second restoration 19. 00 miles ago.

Not just a beautiful straight body & excellent paint but also. span >  when it comes down to all the cosmetic details. this GTO stands tall. Look closely at the GTOs "Pontiac" tail panel. all the badging. the chrome Hood scoops. all the stainless and chrome. Better than most you will see. And the Cameo Ivory exterior and

Black interior coincide with the factory Trim Tag codes.

 Options

Current options include proper date coded 3-2bbl 348 HP intake. carbs & linkage . correct  1964 M-20 4 speed w/ Hurst shifter. Power Steering. Power Brakes. Power convertible Top. Pontiac custom Sport Steering Wheel. Dual Exhaust Splitters. Console. Positraction. /Safe T Track. Back up lights. Push button radio. Factory Tachometer. Original custom wheel discs w/ spinner rims. ( Correct Trunk mats. matching spare tire cover. 14x7 mounted redline tire and another 4- 14" original factory steel rims and original jack come with the car. )

An especially great find for a GTO Enthusiast that can fully appreciate how the former GTO Association member- owners tried to keep the car 100% factory complete and engine bay factory original style.
. And for anyone that wants a turn- their- heads cruiser that likely will appreciate in value and don't want to spend money on it to both drive and show it. . Southwest car. last  4 owners documented. Obviously a pampered vehicle that owners. members of the National GTO Association. kept mostly original without modifications.

GTO collectors. Numbers Info

I think the engine long block is probably the original. Since vin # derivitives where not stamped on the early GTOs. it cannot be verified with relative certainty.  However. the block casting number and block code do both match the PHS docs indicating how the car was originally built. Originally an automatic. 4 barrel GTO. 4 speed and Tripower were added  and. importantly. span >  both were done very well with attention to correct  casting codes on both units.

Detailed Description

2017 Cosmetic Improvements

Brand New American Racing 14" Torque Thrusts. New Coker Radial Redline tires. Rechromed rear bumper. re-chromed and detailed Hood Scoops. Brand new convertible top. New spark plug wires. spark plugs. new valve cover gaskets. air cleaner filters. Rear re-chromed bumper. Rear Wiring Harness. Battery. new Battery Cables. Rear tail light assemblies. armrest bases. GM stainless sill plates. License plate light. etc. a long list of 2017 "refreshment" items done so you don't have to put a penny into the details that make a classic show strong.

Body & Paint

Straight with no dents or visible body filler. Quarters. hood. fenders doors. look very nice and straight.   Floors and trunk very good to excellent. Notice that the trunk area including inner quarters are correctly painted the body color. 1964 GTOs were never spatter painted. Spatter paint and trunk mats cover a lot of trunk floor problems.   Look at the painted trunk area pictures. span >  Cameo Ivory white as it was when first built. Panel fitment is factory. if not better. Two stage Paint from down- to- metal restoration per written summary. is still excellent after 19. 00 CA post restoration miles.

The file contains pictures of the owners finished car with a white convertible top and Cali plates in their driveway. Correct Base Cameo Ivory with probably at least 3 coats of clear. Paint luster is deep. especially for white. its even smooth and free of checking or lifting clear coat. . most  who have seen the car think it was very recently painted.

Weather stripping is still supple and properly fit. This GTO is a very complete specimen. No missing knobs or aftermarket upgrades. Only thing I noticed is washer rubber lines are removed. (It never rains in California. ha)

 Glass

The Glass is some of the best I've seen. All Original tinted LOF except the front tinted windshield is a date coded Pilkington. the best you could buy at the time. I used this company my self  years ago on a rare Camaro restoration and had the glass shipped all the way to Arizona. No scratches. Windows roll up and down correctly without regulator issues.

Brightwork

Original Chrome bumpers are replated and straight with high reflective quality. Stainless trim all over is really excellent. Even the Chrome convertible top frame rail over the windshield is near perfect. These are almost always rusty or at least pitted. not this one. Badging is all restored/replaced and some re-detailed for a crisper look.

Grille and headlight bezels appear original and very nice and detailed. There is a pinpoint dent in the grill center bar and a couple in each headlight bezel. Not really noticeable without a very close inspection. The original Spinner Hub Caps come with the car. 2 are really nice. 2 have perimeter scrapes and dents.

 Interior

Dash pad is perfect. the dash itself was part of the restoration and the gloss black paint. machined stainless bezel. factory gauges. lenses. even the steering wheel look great. These Factory optional Steering wheels are usually pretty pitted. this one is one of the best you will see. All the knobs and levers are there. All the gauges work. even the fuel gauge. factory built in Tach and Speedo. Period 3-gang chrome gauges showing oil pressure. water temp and volts were added.

The Black interior  is all very. very nice. Buckets and back seating are in very good shape. factory correct and with no rips or sags at all. Door panels and emblems are nice and without damage. Black Carpeting does not show wear and is not faded out. Also has factory correct Pontiac floor mats. GM stainless door sills are new. New Power top folds down with a button push automatically and fast without any hesitation. noises or leaks.

Engine Bay

Clean and detailed close to original factory paint schemes. The engine compartment is factory original style. New hood insulation with square retention clips. Nice properly painted inner fenders. Harrison radiator. Tower clips. GM lettered heater hoses. original exhaust manifold. de clutching fan. span >  Original Chrome valve covers. correct 1964 intake and 1964 dated Carbs and Air Cleaners and with correct linkage including yellow return spring and steel vacuum brake line. Original style alternator (not one wire) Original points distributor (not HEI or MSD).

I am no expert on GTOs. I restore Chevelles and Camaros but my research involved comparing the show judged engine bays to this one and I learned a lot. I did take the liberty of adding new blue Accel spark plug wires and new red fabric filters which would certainly cost me points! I kept the old filters. however.

Electrical

Harnesses are factory correct. No goofy amateur wiring found! Even the fuse block looks good. If you want to tell if a car lived in an inclement environment. look behind the dash board. I think the electrical harnesses may have been completely replaced during one of the restorations judging by their good condition. I did have some rear light issues to sort. I replaced the rear harness with American Autowire classic reproduction factory correct harness and installed new bulbs and new tailight plastic lense panels. Lic plate light. brake lights. and turn signals all now work. Now It's the only old car I own that doesn't have some electrical gremlins.

All the dash gauges work so nothing to do there. Heater. High and low beam headlights work and front signal lights as well. Had some dirty contacts is all. The radio might work but prior owner had a CD/stereo wired and installed in the glove box to retain the factory radio look. The kick panels are still the original. No speakers mounted.

Undercarriage
Documented California and Texas history so Undercarriage. floor pans. frame. suspension. trunk floor are all excellent. not covered in undercoating. undamaged and partly detailed. I can provide more pictures on request.   Did you know these old goats are 4 link? And GTO  Convertible frames were boxed?   GTO internet resources are great.

The factory style Exhaust system has surface rust on the steel exhaust pipes of course.  It may well be a complete Gardner GTO reproduction system according to file notes. It sounds just like it did in 1964.    I bought a Flowmaster exhaust system for the side exit GTO splitters to put on it. It's still in the box. Why? because someone said they thought it would be better to keep that original 1964 GTO exhaust sound instead of the typical Rumpity- rump Flowmaster that I put on all my cars. So you get to decide as the exhaust kit comes FREE when you Buy it now.

My longtime mechanic/metal man went over the undercarriage with me after I bought the car. It needed left Upper A- Arm bushings and both rear Control arm bushings. I bought a complete new A- Arm for the left front and both rear control arms as it was cheaper than the labor on replacing just the bushings.  AZ & CA are great environments for metal but hard on rubber!

Operating condition-Cold Start Video 01 and running 02. ********** in your search bar or in YouTube.

This is a driver you can depend on. Recently serviced with Zinc additive. of course.   Good oil pressure. Quick starting. steers straight and easily. does not wander. shifts well through all gears without synchro or linkage issues at all. not too stiff a clutch. stops good without grinding or squeeking brake noises. And even though its a convertible it does not have the typical  " creeky" sounds many do have. Pretty tight.   Engine was rebuilt but no exact data on when. But recent enough it would have hardened valve seats. It does not detonate on 91 octane. Runs cool too. Idles correctly. choke works properly. Does not smoke. Tri power kicks in smoothly. whoooooop!. the sound took me back to 67 when I drove a 64 tripower GTO.

A great running and driving car. span >  but not perfect. There is an on and off leak towards the front of the car. After a few weeks of sitting there is a spot of oil about the size  of a fist. and although the transmission shifts perfectly as I said. without any synchro. grinding or noise specific to any one gear. the tranny is a little noisier than I think it should be but MAY just be missing floor insulation when the conversion was done. Worse case scenario is a rebuild in its future although . t shifts flawlessly right now.

Title work

Clear regular title currently registered in Arizona in my individual name. Title shows mileage of 23. 00 not actual. likely 123. 00. I bought the car from a Texas Broker. Most recent owner is still in California and I have a pretty good file of info about the car with each owner and shops since the 1990's.

Taxes

I'm a collector. not a dealer and not a mechanic. In AZ. no sales tax is due on private sales. I've sold many of my own muscle cars on Ebay over 30 years of collecting and restoring. They usually sell before the end of the auction with Buy it Now. Check my feedback on recent sales as a seller. I spend a lot of time describing the car in detail. but there still can be lots of questions about so many aspects. Please do email me with your questions. and will happily talk with serious buyers on the phone. I will respond to every question honestly.

I always encourage inspections. People that have looked at what's out there and see this car will know its priced well.

Go to NADA classic car book value guide for value information on 1964 Convertible GTOs and add options.   Dealers use them at the auctions.

Why selling? I have to sell this GTO as I have 2 cars coming out of shops and no place to garage them. I am already paying storage on my 65 Chevelle SS.

Transportation

Buyer's transport is at their own expense. I will assist buyer's transporter for a smooth pick up time and place and take pictures of the loading process and the car as well as the truck's license plate and email them to the buyer.
