These TransAm's have been escalating in value with each passing year. and they are becoming increasingly more difficult to find. I am selling this TransAm as needing a complete restoration where every part and panel will need to be repaired or restored in order to bring this car back to its former glory. This could also be used as a great parts car. but my choice would be to bring it back to life. The mileage is believed to be correct at 62. 38. but the mileage is blank under the odometer reading on the title. so there is no way to prove the mileage as accurate. I will explain everything I found out from the previous owner at the point of purchase. He said this is the original numbers matching 400 cubic inch engine. but it has not been started in over a decade. He had this TransAm stored in a storage unit during his entire ownership. The shaker and the quadra-jet carburetor are the originals to the car. If you are looking to restore a TransAm you may as well choose a rare code 75 Mayan Red TransAm with a white bucket seat interior. I've always felt this is one of the most attractive color combinations in a TransAm. I would think that the majority of muscle car enthusiasts would tend to agree that a red body with a white interior is one of the most highly sought after models and brings the largest return on the resale classic car market.
The prior owner made this purchase with the intention of restoring this rare gem. but he had three other TransAm's. I ended up buying two of his TransAm's in a package deal. He did not have the keys for this car. and it was missing the radiator. I just had a new ignition lock cylinder installed and I found a guy who had an original radiator out of a 1976 TransAm. The replacement radiator was mounted in place in front of the original a/c condenser. The top plate that goes over the radiator is missing. but all the belts are still in place including the a/c belt. I don't know all that much about TransAm's. but I do remember every guy wanted one when I was younger. In fact when I was in high school three of my closest friends all bought brand new TransAm's in 1978. One was brown and another one was white and the third one was black. After all what guy doesn't want a TransAm? An original Mayan Red TransAm wasn't seen very often. Their reasoning behind not purchasing a red one was because red cars back then had a higher insurance rate. and they attract the most attention by the law. Needless to say an original red TransAm is becoming a very rare find. The winning bidder will most likely have endless thumbs up wherever they drive after this baby is restored. You should have an outgoing personality to own a car like this. because everywhere you go people will be attracted to you like a magnet.
This TransAm has some nice options that include Power Steering. Power Front Disc Brakes. Tilt Steering Wheel. Electric Rear Defogger. Radial Tuned Suspension. Pontiac Rally Wheels. and Air Conditioning. The factory air conditioning looks to be mostly complete. This TransAm does still have the original factory sway bars and the positive traction posi-rear-end. From what I can see most of the original factory parts are still in place. The prior owner said this car has only had one repaint somewhere in the past. but several areas on the car were touched up with some red spray to save the panels that were starting to show wear. This TransAm body is all original except for one repaint somewhere back in the 80's or 90's. so it looks faded. The Screaming Fire Chicken and the TransAm decals were not replaced after the repaint. but a complete set of those replacement decals can be found on-line at Phoenix Graphics for a reasonable price. This is a true TransAm not a Firebird made to look like one. The dash could use a new replacement pad. but is in fairly good shape. The headliner is drooping. but may be able to be saved or a replacement will be in order. The front seats are showing wear. so a new pair of seat covers were placed on the bucket seats. The console is in very nice condition. Usually there are a several burn marks from careless smokers on these consoles that have survived for 39 years. but this one is nice and smooth on top with the original finish. There is an aftermarket old school Panasonic AM/FM Cassette stereo player in the dash with some Pioneer 4x6 speakers on the package tray under the back window. but the stereo is not hooked up. The area around the stereo on the dash was never cut up. so I do believe an original factory Pontiac Delco AM/FM could be mounted in the original spot if the new owner decides to go back with the factory look. That decision will be left up to the winning bidder. The carpet will need to be replaced. but there is a set of four brand new black carpeted floor mats. This TransAm has the original interior and does show wear. but is still in relatively decent condition as evident from the pictures. All four Pontiac 15" inch Rally wheels have a set of four raised white lettered Firestone Firehawk P235/60R15 inch steel belted radial tires with very good tread. The Rally wheels have all four center caps. and all four beauty trim rings. I didn't see any evidence of this car ever being involved in any accidents. I'm selling this TransAm as a parts car or a restoration special with an open. clean. and clear title that was last issued on 2/14/2001 in the State of Illinois.
The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has the 1978 Pontiac TransAm with the original 400 cubic inch engine and air conditioning listed at $43. 50 in high condition. which they consider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored. or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices.
The average condition value is $22. 25 which they consider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint. trim. and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a 20-Footer!
Nada has the lowest condition value at $14. 87 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration. but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car. but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. The numbers don't lie! This Matador Red TransAm is a very valuable automobile if restored properly! These second generation 1970-81 TransAm's have consistently shown to escalate in value with each quarter. What you see is exactly what you get! This is a great car for a father and son project to bond as a family unit. Why not make your money work for you while your son learns how to work on cars. Any money that is invested into this car will increase the value immensely. This is a great car to restore and show up at your high school class reunion to prove how cool you still are. I tried to describe all of the pertinent information. so any potential bidder can make the most informed decision possible before placing their bid. If there is anything else you feel that may have been missed. please ask any questions you like. They will all be answered in a timely fashion in explicit detail. This Rare Mayan Red TransAm is being offered at "No Reserve" on a quick 3-day auction and will sell Monday evening at 8:00pm Eastern time. 7:00pm Central time. and 5:00pm Pacific time. The $2000 PayPal deposit is to be paid immediately and the balance wire transferred within 72 hours.
