1967 1/2 Datsun Roadster Solex 2000 Fairlady Very Rare! for sale

Current customer rating: current rating for this car(2.05) based on 753 votes

Very rare 67 1/2 2000 factory solex roadster.  There were an estimated 700-750 2000 roadsters built in 1967. and only a few hundred had the Solex carbs with the "B" cam and 7 quart oil pan.  I was told by the original owner that only one of these cars was available at each dealership.  He had an established relationship with the dealer and was able to purchase this one.   I never expected to sell this car. but alas. another summer has passed once again and we just haven't driven enough to justify keeping it.

The History of the car:

A photo of the original purchase was receipt is included in the photos.  The car was purchased April 8. 1968 in Winnipeg and was raced with an all Nissan race team that included another 67 2000 and a 68 2000.  It was raced on local oval ice tracks and hill climbing events until 1976 when it was parked until I bought in in 1993.  It was never licensed and never driven on the regular street.  The condition of the car was a mixed bag. while the body had suffered from the 8 years of racing. many interior parts had been removed prior to racing and stored. which left them in great original condition.   An example of this is the ignition and key. which hadn't been removed. radio. and many of the gauges. which all appear new.   I don't know what the actual mileage is on the car.   The pedal pads. etc were all like new and the speedo was hooked up when I bought it.   I do not think it has 108K on it as it was never on the road. and I have photos of it being trailered to events.

Frame and Body:

The car was completely disassembled and the frame was blasted and repainted. and measured for straight.  It does have some dings in the bottom from it's hill climbing days. but nothing that would be of concern. and reflect it's history.  All new neoprene bushings were put back in and everension item was cleaned. painted. and lubricated. and aligned at a professional shop here in Portland.   Rear leaf springs were re-arched to factory specs and all new grade 8 style hardware was used on suspension.   New KYB's all around.

A friend of mine owns a top notch auto body shop in town and the body of the car was completely stripped. all rust was removed. nbsp;metalwork done. nbsp;etch primed at painted with multiple coats of code 511 paint (a factory color) with multiple coats of clear and finish sanded and buffed to a beautiful finish.   Particular attention was paid to some very fine design lines that are often sanded off by people less connected to Datsun roadsters (I'm thinking of the tops of the front and rear fenders and the rear panel).   I've tried to show them in the photos.   There are a few chips in the paint around the hood area that have collected over the last 12 years that need a little touchup.   There is no evidence of any paint "bubbling" or Orange peel. etc.   It is one of the finest finishes you will see on a car.

Engine:

As this was a race car. the block is not the original one. and is that of an early 68 U20 (#33xx). but retains all of it's original 67 equipment including the non-smog head. solex cabs (early first series) with the 67 Solex air cleaner. 67 valve cover. oil pan. windage tray. cam. etc.   We spent a significant amount of energy on the engine which was completely gone through. including dying the block to assure they were no cracks. line boring the head for the cam. nbsp;etc.   The cylinder and standard rings were in spec and we simply replaced them after a hone.   Head was in perfect condition and required no milling. etc.   The machinist felt that the engine was in fantastic condition and probably didn't need to come apart. but I wanted the assurance that all was good.   The cam chain and all tensioners and gears were replaced.  I was told these were the last in the Nissan inventory.   It has run like new in the 1. 00 miles we've driven it with no problems.   The exhaust manifold is NOS jet coated and the rest to the tailpipe is excellent reproduction.   It sounds great.   It pops when you decelerate quickly from backpressure. which I've heard is common due to the compression in the engine.

Transmission:

The 5-speed transmission was completely disassembled. cleaned and serviced.   This is the type with the brass synchros. which were all replaced at significant expense.   The shift forks were all built back up and then ground back to factory specs.   The 5th gear nut was welded as the experts recommend.   A roadster specialist once drove the car and commented that it may not have been this smooth when it came from the factory.   The flywheel was resurfaced and a 240z clutch was installed.   It is a common thing to do with these cars because they like to burn up the factory clutch.   New clutch master cylinder and hose installed.

Cooling:

I had the radiator and heater core cleaned and recored. New thermostat and water pump.  Also found all of the original cotton braided hoses NOS with the original hose clamps.   New heater control valve (it's stiff from sitting. but I will free it up again).   Rare Reproduction radiator shroud (specific to a 67 2000) with repro stickers

Brakes/Clutch:

New OEM clutch Master cylinder. new clutch hose. new clutch slave cylinder. new clutch tension spring.   NOS OEM Brake Master. new brake hoses. new pistons. nbsp; new pads. new shoes. New rotors New rear wheel cylinders.  Pedal assemblies were disassembled and painted and reinstalled. new clutch. throwout bearing and pressure plate.

Electrical:

All of the electrical was cleaned and reused except for the engine harness which is NOS.   Fog lights are replicas. I could never find the rare everwings that were an option on the car.   The headlight hi-beem switch doesn't work.   We haven't driven it at night so we just haven't gotten around to seeing what's unplugged.   The original radio isn't plugged in as I've added a stereo CD player and changer in the trunk. controlled by a joystick in the front.

The car also has a pertronix unit installed with an MSD electronic ignition hidden under the dash. and the corresponding high voltage coil (painted to look stock). These cars with Solexes can idle rough. but that really smoothed things out.

Chrome and Plated Parts:

Some chrome is original. but if in any doubt that it wasn't great. nbsp;it was rechromed.   The rear license trim ring is reproduction made in a very limited quantity by a top notch restorer in California.   Taillights are all NOS.   Headlight rings are original with the 67 2000 frosted inside.   Grill is original. straightened and rechromed.

Interior:

As in other areas is a mixture of the best quality new parts with original parts that were in very good shape.   The headrests. which are very rare have the covers etc.   Shift plate was lost in it's racing days and is reproduction cast out of aluminum.   Soft top frame is all original. top is German Cloth with the zip down rear window.   The sunvisors are original and rare.   I've taken a photo of the tear/patch near one screw.   I wanted to find a way to redo them in the correct silver. but could source anyone that could do it.

The clock was completely restored. but runs a little fast (I think there's an adjustment screw on the back).   Other gauges are totally original.   Amp gauge has the 30 amp fuse added to protect it from blowing (common on these cars).   Speedo needle bounces a bit sometimes. but I think that's the cable.

The only other minor issue I've had is keeping the window winders on.   I think they need different clips than what I have.   I am going to tinker with them a little more in the next week.

Wheels and Tires:

You will notice I restored the original wheels with the whitewall tires.   Original hubcaps were rechromed.

Payment. etc:

I've done my best to recollect what all I've done from 1993-2001 on this car. but it's impossible to remember everything.   I will add details to the description if it's relevant.   If you want a Datsun that everyone walks up to and says "Do you know what you have here?". this is the one.

The car is as-is condition. nbsp;and I simply cannot warranty something like this that's over 40 years old.   If a prospective bidder wants to view the car. nbsp;hear it run. drive. etc. please contact me and we'll set up an appointment.   Payment must be received within 7 calendar days of auction ending and must clear before you drive off in bliss.   If payment has not been received within 7 calendar days. I reserve the right to cancel the transaction and move to another. or no other bidder.

On Sep-13-13 at 22:08:39 PDT. seller added the following information:

A number of people asked the following: Do you have a picture of the frame number? Yes I will try to post. Do you have the boot for the top? Yes I have a new German cloth boot and I do have a used toneau Are the velocity stacks in the trunk included? Yes Is there a Buy-it-Now? No. as I have people looking at the car during the auction I do not want to do that. Are there holes in the body for the stereo or speakers? No. they were mounted so they would not damage the body. Where is the other 67 that was raced? It is number 699 and is owned by Dan Welch in New Brunswick.
