1964 Volvo 1800s with 65 pages of excellent documentation starting with the original deposit receipt. sales order. communication between original owner and Volvo and vice versa. Owners manual log records that are detailed from new until the 1980's. Documents from the Netherlands. Europe and the U. S.
This 64 Volvo 1800s was ordered new by a Mr. David Goodwill of Rancho Palos Verdes. California. He worked in the petroleum business and traveled all over the USA. Europe and North Africa. I have the original Volvo deposit receipt which starts this cars amazing history and documentation.
Mr. Goodwill took delivery of this Volvo at Den Haag. Netherlands on April 24th. 1964. I have the original Volvo sales order showing this Volvo as a factory white paint with red leather car. His total cost was $3635. 00. There is also some documentation from the Netherlands. which looks like possibly a permit of some sorts.
Mr. Goodwill used the Volvo throughout Europe and refers to a carnet program in a few documents. The Volvo was scheduled to be returned to the States in September of 1964 and Mr. Goodwill did deliver the car to a shipper in Belgium in August of '64 but received notice the next day that he was to go to England for no less than a year on business. As you can read in one of his letters to Volvo he returned just in time to retrieve the car before it was loaded on the ship.
I also have a temporary registration card from the United Kingdom stamped "Dover" from August of 1965. The Volvo was delivered to New York in September of 1965 and I do have the tax receipt from its delivery. I do know that Mr. Goodwill had an office in New York as well as in Texas and California (San Francisco and Long Beach area). I have several service receipts from Texas. La Fayette. Ca and Southern California. The correspondence between Mr. Goodwill and Volvo is also still with the car.
The service history on the car is well documented with receipts from service shops over the years. As well as Mr. Goodwills' owners manual which shows detailed entries from new until September of 1984 at 104. 00 miles. And when I say detailed I mean detailed! This owner documented everything.
The Volvo was finally sold by Mr. Goodwill after 21 years of prideful ownership. The 2nd owner purchased the Volvo in 1985 and yes I have the bill of sale from that transaction. Now the 2nd owner was and still is a family friend. I dont want to age myself but I have known the car since 1985. The 2nd owner drove the Volvo daily for a few years and then parked it. all the time (as previously) it was stored indoors. The Volvo then was parked (indoors) until approx. 1992-on when the 2nd owner began to have work done on the car. and yes I have receipts for that as well. A bare metal repaint was performed in late 1992 to the sum of $3. 18. 50 and the paint shop has the approx. time in shop for paint job at 8-12 weeks. At this time the windshield was replaced with a new one and all the rubber/weatherstripping was replaced. The interior was redone in red but vinyl. The carpet and door panels were redone as well as the headliner.
The 2nd owner kept the Volvo and drove it very little up until earlier this year. He knew I had always liked the car and offered it to me. I purchased it without hesitation.
Since the car sat a lot I did have the SU carburetors rebuilt and all new fuel lines installed. We also installed a new gas tank. The 18B engine runs very nicely and according to the 2nd owner it had been rebuilt in the 1990's. I did have a new ceramic coated header installed as well as Pertronix ignitor II electronic ignition. The radiator was pulled and rebuilt and the water pump. thermostat and temp. sender was replaced. The car runs great and in 100 degree weather we have had in California lately it runs around 180-190 degrees. The Volvo is a 4 speed manual with overdrive.
The body on the Volvo is very straight as expected with no sign of filler or waves in the bodywork. This Volvo is a straight honest car. The floors are clean and solid as one would expect from a California car. The trim is very nice and all the chrome was replated in the 90's but there is some light pitting starting on the bumpers. They look great but thats how they are. The glass is perfect. The body gaps are all very good. It has fender mirrors which have been on the car since the original owner and the rear view mirror according to the original owner and the 2nd owner has always been on the windshield which is where it is now. The paint is very nice and looks like it was painted just a couple years ago. There are 2 minor smooth shallow dents. one in the drivers door and one in the passenger rear quarter. These are very soft/small dings but they are there. They dont take away from the car. There is also some very light bubbles on the top of the passenger fender at the antenna. again very slight and small the area of a quarter in size. Please understand this car was painted in 1992. but I would put it up against most cars just painted. you can see that it was a straight honest car to begin with and it looks great to this day. The pics are very representative of how the car looks. Its just a very pretty and elegant Volvo. I cannot make any excuses for this car. even with its slight flaws its still a very nice car with probably some of the best documentation and known history of any 1800 out there.
Under the hood is the original 18B engine with dual SU carbs. The motor is clean and the carbs like I said were rebuilt and have new air cleaners. Engine runs excellent and always starts up even if sitting for a week or two. Under the hood still retains the factory white paint. The 2nd owner did not have the engine compartment painted. On the positive side one can see that all the inner structure is original and has never been repaired. The nose area is clean.
Interior was redone in 1992 and it still looks really nice. There is some slight fading on the top of the back seat and the carpet in the package tray area but overall the interior is very nice and the upholsterer (whom I knew as well) did a nice job. The door panels are not the reproduction panels and do not have the Volvo logo on them or the chrome strip. same as the back seat. no logo in the center. I think back in 1992 the original pattern was replicated. The headliner was also done and is beautiful with stitching across. The carpet is grey and also was redone. The dash pad was redone as well but it presently does have 2 thin cracks in it. The dash is very clean but the clear knobs are looking brittle and tired but I do have new replacements that go with the car. The speedometer works. Oil temp. works. and there is an aftermarket water temp. gauge under the dash which has been there for quite some time. i did replace the old gauge which was faulty with a new one. I have not looked into the water temp. factory gauge to see if it works. I would think there was an issue since the aftermarket gauge was installed. The tachometer was working but has recently stopped. The clock and oil pressure gauge do not work presently and i have not looked into them to determine why. All the windows roll up nicely and the locks all work.
Brakes: The brakes do work really good but I do think the front calipers may need adjustment. The front brakes seem to stick a little. If you pull to a stop and then release the brake pedal and accelerate you can feel some slight drag on the front brakes. It isnt bad and it releases quickly but it does do that so I want any potential buyer to know that they will need to be looked into.
Steering: Front suspension feels good and the car handles very well. i do know that the steering box was rebuilt and some front end suspension work was performed in the 90's. The car also has power brakes.
Transmission: 4 speed shifts very smoothly and the overdrive works flawlessly.
Lights: All lights work. Headlights and turn signals as well as brakes. i just installed a new brake light switch about 2 weeks ago.
Trunk is very clean and there is carpet installed as well as a vinyl cover for the spare. jack and iron are present. The vent lines for the tank are good and the rubber seal for the gas tank door is new. The key for the gas door is present and works nicely.    Car has a clean California title in my name.
PM me if you have any questions.  Car doesnt leave my custody until payment is received and confirmed cleared. This may delay shipping the car until I have absolute confirmation.
I do have a tourist diplomat keychain with the car. Volvo does show this in their records as a Tourist/Diplomat car.
