This is a rare opportunity to own what some say is "the nicest BMW ever built". I have here one of only a handful BMW E9 Karmann bodied Coupes. a 1973 BMW 3. 0 CS.

The Story of this E9 coupe: I found it on a local Craigslist advert about 2 years ago. It said good mechanicals and decent body with working AC. I took a look at it in fell in love with the body style. It did need a lot of work. but was a "driver". I made an offer on the car and bought it on the spot. I drove it as a daily driver for about 3 months. Within that time. I took a closer look and did my part of research online on what some of the quirks and issues are. There was hidden rust (which one does not have any?) and some things needed work. It did have a terrible paint job. the kind that was done in someone's backyard. It was not taken apart to paint. just a terrible "tape-up job". The more I looked. the more I found. . . I decided to do new paint and see where it leads me.

The original color of the CS was Fjord Blue. which is a nice color and I liked it. The color that was on the car vaguely resembled Fjord. but was about 3 shades off. So off the car went to a buddy of mine that worked at a local body-shop. Prior to him taking the car away. I stripped all the hardware side windows (I did not touch the front or rear window. as I was afraid of damaging it). and anything else I could remove (including the bumpers). He worked on the car on his spare time. and stripping all the paint off by hand sanding. About 3 months in. he realized the job he had undertaken! It had in some spots as much as 7 layers of paint! But down to bare metal it went.

About 9 months into the bodywork. while my buddy was still stripping and straightening the body. I decided that I wanted to make it a mild custom. with an unusual paint. and a CSL look-a-like. Mind you at this point I've already collected lots of replacement parts already. but I added more by getting the fiberglass air dam & rear bumper. I still have the original bumpers but chrome is flaking off and they are in "poor condition" at best. Since I work for a BMW dealership in Hawaii. I saw the arrival of the first cars with Marrakech Brown and immediately fell in love with it. Marrakech Brown could be a great vintage looking color. so I decided to go that route. By the end of 2012. it was finally time to get the car painted. The paint came out fabulous -- all the hours of hand sanding really show once you put paint on it.

At that point. I focused some time on the interior re-assembly. I stripped all old insulation material and re-lined it with sound deadening material below a brand new carpet set. I also had all the door trim wood replaced with a used set I sourced over Ebay (not cheap!!). I had the seats re-upholstered in black vinyl. with the original horse-hair material. since the original leather was so dry and cracked. that it was like a taco when you pushed down on it.

I gave the paint about a month to cure before I had it color sanded for ultimate shine & re-assembly of the exterior. So on went the air dam. the new blinkers. rear bumper. and chrome. I was starting to see the fruits of my labor. . .

I then started to focus on maintenance and mechanicals. The steering was vague. so all new steering arms went in including a pitman arm. Fresh filters went in. new oil. and then I noticed an exhaust leak. . . so I got an OEM silencer. new back-pipe. and chrome tip. I am finishing up the new AC compressor bushings (which BMW unfortunately no longer makes).
