A charming car. with plenty of vintage character. not least of which is the delightful. original soft golden brown leather interior front & rear. which really enhances the original feel of the car. Also appealing are the ‘V' windscreen with peak. correct set of lamps and instruments. and fine woodwork which incorporates lovely occasional seats and a curve-fronted cabinet between them. The car is in good all round condition. clean and presentable. driving well. and used enthusiastically by the last owner for 15 years. Benefits from a brand new cylinder head fitted in recent years. correct 21” wheels with recent new tyres. and is offered newly MoT tested.

Snippets:

GWL40 was delivered to AP Grimshaw Leather & Co - Rolls-Royce & Daimler specialists who occasionally created one-off bodies for these cars to their clients' requirements. James Coldwell Lawson (1876/1951) JP took delivery of GWL40 shortly after he was elected to the Newcastle City Council. during WWII J. C. Lawson was heavily involved in the party politics of the time – namely the situation between Sir Cuthbert M. Headlam & Henry Grattan-Doyle whose father (Sir Nicholas Grattan-Doyle) had held the Conservative seat in Newcastle Upon Tyne from 1918 until 1940. In 1931 J C Lawson was created a JP and he continued to serve with the Council until 1945. It is recorded that 5 members of the Lawson family served as High Sherriff of Northumberland between 1561 & 1840. James's father also called James Coldwell (1837/1909) and in 1861 his business was as an importer of Silver Sand (high in silica). Iron Ore and exporter of various Chemical and Copperas (Iron Sulphate). by 1888 the business had expanded by J. C. Lawson Snr to include the importation of fruit & potatoes. A few years after J. C. Lawson Jnr's death. GWL40 is shown as being with Linden C Wright whose business included agricultural & car sales and a fleet of coaches & buses; during WWII Linden used to transport the British Army & prisoners of war to work on the local farms. After the war he ran various bus services from Rothbury to Blackpool plus a service to London (a long way to go whilst sat on slatted seats).
