1955 Mercury Monterey 2 Door Cruiser for sale
Up for auction is one sweet 1955 Mercury Monterey cruiser. This Mercury is the kind of car you see at a local show and say “that is just what I am looking for… beautiful. practical. reliable. and finished just to the right level… gorgeous… built with care and craftsmanship. but drivable. ”
This particular Monterey was brought east from California several years ago. and is not your typical north east made-over rusty car. Starting from a good. solid substraight. a well-known. local “old school” rod builder restored this car to the level you see now. Mildly customized. it largely retains its original look. but cleaner. From upstate New York. where the car resides now. it has been driven to shows and meets as far away as Kansas. and is regularly driven to shows in the northeast. such as Syracuse and Macungie. It is not only a cruiser in name; it is a cruiser in deed.
The BODY of this Mercury is straight and solid. Starting a project with a good. straight. solid car is essential if one expects to end up with a worthwhile result. It is also essential to the final value of a project. The body of this Monterey runs out nice and straight. and the door. hood. and trunk gaps are nice. The paint is very nice. blocked. sanded and buffed to a “no peel” mirror finish. The colors are rich and deep. It is a pleasure to mist this car with a little spray detailer. then run your hand over it with a micro fiber towel and watch it gleam.
The INTERIOR is very nicely done with color coordinated blue and ivory upholstery that really pops. The carpeting and headliner are very nice. The dash is very pretty; classic 50's. There are a few small chrome pieces. such as interior door handles and window cranks. with minor pitting that could use a little polishing or plating. but the overall look is so pretty. the minor flaws just disappear. The speedo sticks sometimes. which is why I listed the mileage as "99999. "
The exterior CHROME. especially the grill and bumpers. are straight and rich. The stainless trim. by and large. is very pretty. and there is a lot of it on this Monterey. Some of the trim around the windows is just nice original. showing some patina. Not perfect. but very nice. I think the pictures tell the story.
The ENGINE is the correct 292 cubic inch “Y” block V8. It has undergone an “in car” rebuild. including main and rod bearings. and the heads were totally rebuilt. It is my understanding that the 292 was notorious for valve train oil starvation. so all valve train related items have been carefully inspected for wear. or replaced. A modern Edelbrock 4 barrel carb with electronic choke sits under the authentic “bat wing” Cadillac air cleaner. The car starts easily. and runs down the road strongly. It has a nice “50's” glass pack rumble when you put your foot in it. but is quiet at cruising speeds. It shifts smoothly. The engine bay is presentable. but would really pop with a little detailing. As stated earlier. this car is driven a lot. so function has been a little more emphasized here than show.
The TRUNK area is quite nice. with plenty of room for your friends to hide when sneaking in to the drive-in movies (just kidding). The spare is a wide whitewall radial. which matches the four on the road. They are all in good shape for smooth highway cruising.
The UNDERCARRIAGE is that of a solid driver. It is not detailed in any way. The beauty is in its strength. The body mounts. rocker panels. valances. and wheel openings are all solid. Not show. all go.
