While the Firesweep featured DeSotos signature tailfins. the front clip (the front section. forward of the firewall) was based on the Dodge Coronet. The most telling feature was the headlight design. housed under heavily chromed lids typical of Dodge. Firesweep grilles were similar to those on other contemporary DeSoto models.
The Firesweep could seat six passengers and was available as a four-door sedan. five-door station wagon. two-door coupé. and two-door convertible. Depending on the body style. Firesweeps weighed between 3. 60 and 3. 80 lb. Power was provided by Chryslers 361 V8 overhead valve engine capable of 295 hp at 4. 00 rpm. A three-speed manual transmission was standard and an optional TorqueFlite automatic transmission was also available. The majority of 1959 Firesweeps were equipped with the automatic transmission. In 1957. the DeSoto Firesweep was powered by the Dodge Poly 325 V8 with a 2bbl Stromberg down draft carburetor. The 325 was basically a detuned polyspherical combustion chambered version of the Dodge Red Ram 325 Hemi.
The base price of the Firesweep (1957) was US$3. 69 and it was offered in one and two-tone exterior finishes. Features included power steering. power brakes. dashboard clock. push-button radio and whitewall tires.
The ’57 Firesweep Sportsman you see here is said to be a 19. 14 ORIGINAL mile car that has been with the same family for nearly its entire life. The gentleman we purchased the car from bought it from the grandson of the original owner. The interior is all original with the exception of new carpet. The plastic seat covers are even on the seats! . We have no reason to believe that this isn’t a true. 19k mile car. From the functional AM radio to the rear view mirror actually staying in place to the blinkers that cancel when the steering wheel turns. the car functions just like it did in 1957. You rarely find these cars with all of the above working.
The paint is new and in wonderful condition. Finished in the original color of black. there has been red added to the lower section that looks great and really sets the car off. During the repaint. the car was stripped to bare metal and resprayed. This is a very straight and solid car with all of the door closing as they should with good gaps. The stainless trim all looks original and in very good condition with only some very minor pitting and scratches. Nothing notable showing anywhere. The front and rear bumpers were both rechromed during the restoration as well as the taillights. The top section of the two piece front bumper is still original and was not rechromed.
Inside. it appears that new carpet is the only thing that has ever been replaced. The original perforated fiberboard headliner is in nearly perfect condition and shows the originality of the car. The front and rear bench seats are covered with plastic seat covers and look nearly perfect. The dash appears to have never been painted and shows a bit of discoloration around the radio. which is expected from the age. The steering wheel is solid and shows no cracking. Door panels are nearly perfect with on notable wear.
Under the hood. the 325 Cu In V8 runs great and starts with a turn of the key. The motor has been repainted and looks great. The engine compartment is very clean and looks as good as it did when the car rolled off the showroom floor.
In the trunk you will find the original style matting as well as a full size spare and jack. The wheels have been replaced with true chrome wire wheels that are wrapped with brand new bias ply wide white wall tires. The current mileage shows 19. 55 and is said to be actual for the car.
