model description

The 1973 Corvette was truly the end of an era. 1973 was the last year to feature a chrome bumper and is considered by some to be the last year of truly classic Corvettes. Model years after were more at the mercy of insurance companies. fuel prices. and emission concerns. 1973 is considered the last "good" year by many enthusiasts. The 1973 model year is also considered a special and different year for Corvette enthusiasts as it was the only model to have chrome in the back and a rubber bumper in the front. It is representative of the transition Corvette was making at the time. As in investment. the 1973 will always have an advantage and out perform other years because of its precedence as the end of a a very great period for Corvette and muscle cars as a whole.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts. but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example. all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. Most of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description* VIN 1Z67Z3S403731 The first digit. "1. quot; indicated the Chevrolet division of GM. The "Z" is the series. Corvette. The "67" is the body style. convertible. The fifth digit is the engine. Z. correct for an LS4 454ci Corvette. The sixth digit. "3. quot; indicates the model year. 1973. The "S" is the plant where the car was produced. St. Louis. The last five digits are a sequence number so this is the 3. 31st Corvette made for 1973. Body Build Date C02 "C" corresponds to October. and "02" is the second day of the month meaning this Corvette's body build date is October 2. 1972. Engine Code T0913 "T" means the engine was build in the Tonawanda plant.   The "09" is the ninth month of year and the "13" is the thirteenth day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on September 13. 1972.   This is correct as it precedes the build date of the car. Suffix Code CWR This means the motor was intended for an LS4 454ci Corvette with an automatic transmission. which is correct for this car. Engine VIN Stamping 403731 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN. 403731. are stamped on the engine pad meaning this engine is original to this car. Engine Block Casting Number 3999289 The engine block has a 3999289 casting number. which is correct for a big block LS4 1973 Corvette. Engine Block Casting Date F 22 72 "F" is June. "22" is the twenty-second day of the month. and the "72" is the calendar year so the engine block was cast on June 22. 1972. which is correct as it predates the assembly date. Intake Manifold Casting Number 353015 The intake manifold has the correct 353015 casting number for a 1973 LS4 Corvette. This intake was only use on big block Corvettes in 1973. Intake Manifold Casting Date I 8 72 "I" is September. "8" is the eighth day of the month. and the "72" is the calendar year so the intake manifold was cast on September 8. 1972. which is correct as it predates the assembly date. Transmission 73-CS The "73" is the model year. 1973. The "C" means the transmission was made for a Chevrolet vehicle. and the "S" means is was intended for an LS4 454ci big block Corvette. which is correct for this car. Transmission Date Code 207 The assembly date code for the 1973 model year starts with the first day of the calendar year in 1972 and continues through the calendar year in 1973. This means "207" is the 207th day starting with January 1. 1972. which indicates the transmission is dated July 25. 1972. Transmission VIN Stamping 403731 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN. 403731. are stamped on the main case meaning this transmission is original to this car. Rear Differential AW W 192 E 1 The "AW" indicates a 3. 08 gear ratio with positraction. The "W" is the plant where it was produced. Warren. MI. The "192" indicates the 192nd day of the year. "E" is the source for the positraction. Eaton. and "1" is the shift in which it was made. So this rear end was produced on July 10. 1972 in Warren. MI during the first shift. Driver's Window JY "J" is May and "Y" is 1972 so this window was made in May of 1972. Passenger Window LN "L" is March and "N" is 1971 so this window was made in March of 1971.

condition

Exterior

The Blue-Green Metallic exterior is in nice driver condition. As one can see in the photos the finish has a terrific gloss. smooth finish. and deep shine. Both doors open and shut nicely. The wheels are in great condition with a brilliant finish and no curb rash on the beauty rings. The tires are correctly sized 225/70R15 and have about 95% tread left. The convertible top is in excellent condition with no holes or rips. The rear window is perfectly clear with no fogging or yellowing. The top itself operates well and goes up and down easily. There are a few spots and blemishes in the paint and body around car with specific photos below and some that were too tiny to show up in pictures. but nothing else that is really noticeable from about five or ten feet away. As one can see in the many photos of the underside of the car. the bottom of the car is exceptionally clean and this Corvette has absolutely NO RUST ISSUES. The frame is totally solid with no rust around the "key hole" are in front of the rear tire and I have seen no evidence of corrosion around the windshield. which are the two most notorious spots for rust on a C3 Corvette.

The car looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Interior

The Black interior in this Corvette is in terrific condition. The seats are in excellent shape with no split seams or excessive wear. The driver's seat is not worn in the typical area where the driver gets in and out. The carpet is also in fantastic condition with no stains or holes. This includes the rear carpet. which is often neglected. The door pulls are solid and intact. The radio is a modern unit with Bluetooth and auxiliary inputs. Most importantly it is a Corvettes specific unit made for this car so the dash has never cut or modified. The jack and jack handle are still with the car and stored correctly in the compartment behind the passenger seat. pictured below showing the original decals on the compartment lid. The spare is also still with the car. This Corvette has never been smoked in; there are no burns marks and no aroma of cigarettes.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Corvette seems to be in good mechanical condition. As stated above there are receipts totaling over $9. 00 that go with the car. The previous owner also said that he recently had the engine rebuilt. The car runs well and idles smooth. It drives great and feels nice on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph. shifting through all the gears. braking to stoplight. and going through some curves. Please note that there are no vibrations or strange noises and the car performs quite well overall. The brakes have recently been serviced and are responsive; they do not pull to one side or the other. The transmission shifts well. This Corvette has a ton of power with the 454ci engine. Also. the engine compartment is beautifully clean and detailed.

The radio works as do all the exterior lights. wipers. indicators. and all of the gauges with the obvious exception of the clock. The vacuum system for the headlights works correctly with no effort or binding in the mechanism. Also. the headlights go up properly with either the headlight switch or vacuum override switch. Their complete operation form both switches can be viewed in the video below. This is an original a/c car from the the factory. but the compressor has been removed. The blower and the horn do not work. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car. especially with the power from the big block and the top down on a beautiful day

The car runs and drives as well as it looks.

Overall Condition

Overall. this 1973 LS4 454ci Corvette Stingray is in great driver condition. Big blocks are very rare and draw a huge premium over a standard Corvette. Numbers matching is very important in Corvette pricing and as one can see this car is very correct. It is a great value and we have it priced to sell. The value of third generation Corvettes has increased dramatically in recent times. this is especially true for the 1973 model year. They are solid and wise investments for a collector. 1973 was a very special and one year only body style for Corvette that is always recognizable with the newer front end treatment and the classic chrome bumpers on the back. While this is not an NCRS Top Flight or Bloomington Gold car. it is a very nice driver quality big block Corvette and a great car for the money. There are photos below of the VIN stamp on the engine block. suffix code. engine assembly date. transmission VIN stamp. transmission date. and transmission codes. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
