Sometimes an item is so good that its trademarked name becomes a generic term for the entire category of products. Many of us say Kleenex instead of tissue. Xerox instead of copy. or Band-Aid instead of bandage. despite knowing the proper term. The off-roading world finds one more example in the Jeep brand. To many. it's the word that defines all mud-bound machines and examples like this 1980 CJ7 are a great reminder why. This body-off restoration. completed in 2012. is what happens when you buy a $22k CJ7 and use it as the starting point for your own no-limits build. Complete with a rebuilt 401 V8. fresh paint. and a killer period-correct Pack Mule trailer. this is the CJ for those who are ready for something more than just a mud toy. If that sounds like your scene. take a minute and get to know this killer 1980 Jeep.

Nearly every generation of Jeeps has a following but CJ7's are arguably the most sought after of them all. Introduced in '76 as a more civilian-friendly unit. the longer wheelbase and more accommodating U-style doors made them just a little bit easier to live with day to day. This '80 CJ takes those updated traits and covers them in an eye-popping coat Porsche Guards Red that contrast perfectly with the long list of black and chrome accessories found across the vehicle. The paintwork presents well. casting even reflections from nearly any point on the body tub. The paintwork is continued onto a 1979 Pack Mule trailer included in the sale. which has been finished to the same high standards as the Jeep itself. Together. the duo makes a memorable (and functional) first impression.

While you may think of a Jeep as a rugged function-over-form type of vehicle. there are a lot of extras and details that make this CJ well worth a closer examination. At the front. a sturdy Warn-branded bumper supports a Warn 8274 winch. rated at 8. 00lbs. of pulling power. Behind the winch. a fresh vertical grille brings the classic Jeep look while a pair of round headlights in chrome trim sit on either side. The hood is secured by stylish chrome hood clasps and hinges while. behind the hood. chrome windshield hinges accent the showroom new windshield. Behind it. a new black top from Bestop keeps the elements out with style. Along the side. polished rocker trim runs between a set of fender flares while large rectangular rear view mirrors provide plenty of insight into what may be lurking behind you. To the rear of the CJ. square Jeep-branded taillights frame a sturdy spare tire carrier complete with a full size spare and new Hi-Lift jack ready for action. At the bottom. a Pintle hitch and trailer light are ready for any occasion to hook up the Pack Mule.

Lift the hood and you'll find classic Jeep power in the form of an AMC 401 cubic inch V8 borrowed from a Wagoneer of the same era. These engines made somewhere in the neighborhood of 215 hp and 320 lb. ft. of torque in stock form. but this one has received a number of upgrades that allow it to perform in any situation. At the top. a finned billet air cleaner covers a new Holley Street Avenger four-barrel carburetor. Below. stock heads dressed with sharp finned rocker covers sit on either side of an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold. At the front. an accessory drive supports an alternator. power steering pump. and fan. which stand out against the bright blue AMC paint. Across from the accessories. a large aluminum radiator works to keep things cool. Turn the key and the motor fires to life thanks to MSD ignition system built around a 6A box. Spent exhaust gases are released through polished Edelbrock headers which connect to a stainless true dual exhaust system.

Take a look under this CJ and you'll find an undercarriage as well-finished as the rest of the package. A fully boxed frame sprayed in satin black supports the body tub. which sits on new urethane body mounts. It's also a great vantage point to admire details like the chrome oil pan and braided lines. In the center. a three-speed automatic transmission takes care of shifting duties. while a Dana 300 transfer case divides the 401's power between a Dana 30 front axle and an AMC 20 rear. Both ends feature economical 4. 11 gears. new inspection covers. and look fully dressed for show. Around the drivetrain. updated leaf springs. extended U-bolts and a set of Fox Racing shocks add up to a total of four inches of lift. That lift helps accommodate a set of aluminum Mickey Thompson 16-inch wheels wrapped in tall 33-inch BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain T/A tires for some added off-road capabilities. The trailer also benefits from a leaf spring suspension and 31-inch tires so it can follow anywhere the Jeep can lead. The CJ's suspension works in harmony with power steering and power brakes with discs up front and drums in the rear for a surprisingly easy driving experience.

Open up the doors and you'll find a great example of the utilitarian interiors Jeeps are known for. The configuration is based around two high-back bucket seats and a small bench seat. all wrapped in waterproof Bestop seat covers. Between the seats. a Tuffy Security Products center console keeps valuables safe in the exposed cab. From the driver seat. a vintage three-spoke steering wheel offers connection to the front wheel through a factory tilt-column. To the right. controls for the HVAC system sit next to a gauge large enough to monitor speed. temperature. and fuel from the same place. Further over. two smaller gauges keep an eye on voltage and oil pressure. Beneath the smaller gauges. a factory AM/FM radio looks showroom new from its spot in the black plastic dash insert. While there are no gadgets in front of the passenger. a grab bar is a welcome addition. A Jeep logo and stainless glove compartment lid add some extra style to the right side. Below. fresh black carpet covers the majority of the floor while a tubular roll bar hovers overhead for safety.

Alongside the Pack Mule trailer. this Jeep comes with a component manual for the new Holley carburetor and a current North Carolina state inspection statement which verifies all safety components are in place and functional.

This Jeep started its restoration nicer than most and ended up a head-turning show-worthy stunner equally as capable off-road as it is in the show field.
