1971 Triumph Stag Concourse Restoration Project for sale

Current customer rating: current rating for this car(2.1) based on 572 votes

Welcome to my auction for my 1971 Triumph Stag.

I have owned this car for 12 years. and took it off the road in 2009 to replace some worn bushes and re-underseal. I then found some areas of previous repairs that I was not happy with. and this led me to strip the car completely with the view to doing a full nut and bolt rebuild to concourse standard. In the meantime I have become a father and am currently moving home. so my beloved Stag has to go!

Mk1 Triumph Stag finished in pimento red with contrasting black vinyl interior. Tax-exempt as it was built in October 1971. Four speed manual with A type overdrive.

I have an extensive history file on the car dating back to the early '90's with over £12. 00 worth of receipts (plus current rebuild receipts). The main ones dating back to 1990 are as follows.

Nothants Stag Centre £3100 Rebuild spares. soft top etc 1990
Auto Refinishers Bedford £1900 Strip & bare metal respray 1990
Northants Stag Centre £350 Rear wings. bootlid 1/8/90
Northants Stag Centre £600 Body panels. brightwork 19/10/90
Auto 2000 (Beds) £1400 Bumper. wheels. trim 20/11/90
Auto 2000 (Beds) £550 Dashboard retrim. veneer 5/4/91
Brighton Welding Services £400 Alarm. wiring 28/5/92
SOC Spares £440 O/D unit. clutch 1/3/93
James Paddock (Chester) £790 Timing chains. head gaskets 17/5/96 (Mileage 79. 47)

There are lots of other receipts for smaller items and service parts.

I have all MOT's dating back to 19th May 1991. and tax discs from 1991 onwards. There is also a list of all owners from the 14th February 1989 up to current ownership. as well as a heritage certificate. several sales receipts for the purchase of the car by various owners. and insurance valuations.

For the current rebuild I have spent around £2. 00 on new panels. and over £12. 00 on welding. fabrication and painting. The work has been carried out by a local car restorer. He has rebuilt several concourse winning vehicles.

The main work left to do from my point of view would be the refitting and detailing of the engine and gearbox. They are both in very good working order. but would benefit from some cleaning and refurbishing of ancillaries (depending on the level of finish you want). The interior refit should be fairly straightforward.

The car was a show winner prior to being stripped. It won Best Triumph in 2006 and Best British Sportscar in 2007 at the Tatton Park Classic Car Show (this is the only car show where I displayed the car!)

During the course of the rebuild the car was completely stripped to a bare shell. and all the outer panels were acid dipped and stripped. The remaining shell was shotblasted to bare metal. and the following panels replaced.

All four floor pansBoot floorInner and outer sillsAll four chassis outriggersAll four inner wingsFront inner and outer valancesFront radiator mountNearside door skin

There were several small repair panels fitted to the outer body panels where required (wing bottoms etc). Where panels were no longer available. templates were made from my brother's Stag and new panels were fabricated to a very high standard. Overall I spent about £3. 00 on replacement panels alone.

The car was then painted in the original colour of pimento red. 26 litres of paint were used in total and the paint finish is stunning. The whole car. including engine bay. boot bay. interior and exterior floors are finished in body colour to a high gloss finish. All panel gaps are excellent (better than factory!) A hardtop is also included. This has also been stripped. refurbished and repainted to a high standard.

I have re-assembled the front and rear suspension and fitted the steering rack and column so the car can be moved easily. All the refitted suspension parts have been shot blasted and powder coated or refurbished and repainted prior to re-fitting. All new poly bushes have been used. and every nut. bolt and washer used is new.

There are very few parts missing from the car. The main items being the carpet sections from the sills and transmission tunnel. and some small bits of trim and fixings that did not survive the strip down or were deemed not suitable for refitting. Items like handbrake cables have also been disposed of as I planned to replace with new.

Every item that has gone back on the car so far (with the exception of the dashboard and steering column which have been temporarily fitted so the car can be moved) is either new or refurbished.  There are lots of new parts ready to go on - such as brake cylinders. braided brake lines. rubbers. bushes etc.

This would be a very easy project to finish. whether you are looking for a show car or just one of the best Stags you can find.

The interior is in very good condition. The driver's seat base vinyl has been replaced. along with both rear seat foams. The seats are the early non-headrest type. Some of the interior carpeting will need replacing as this did not survive being removed on the strip-down.

The exterior bright work is in excellent condition. The rear light surrounds and door handles would benefit from a re-chrome.  All the glass is present and requires re-fitting.

The engine. gearbox and ancillaries were all in good working order prior to being removed from the car. The engine needs cleaning and detailing before re-fitting.

Overall this would be a very straightforward rebuild. as all the main work has already been completed.  I am open to offers for a quick sale (no silly bids please). I would also be willing to complete the car to your requirements subject to an agreed price and deposit.

You are bidding to buy. Deposit of £500 required within 48 hours of agreed sale. I can arrange transport in the UK at extra cost. The car is currently situated in Droylsden. Manchester M43. You will need a trailer and a van to move the car and all the parts.

Please feel free to contact me via email or telephone 07827 012950 for further information or to arrange a viewing.

Anyone with a negative feedback or feedback score of less than 10 please contact me before bidding.

Thank you for your interest.

Gary.
