1950 Mercury Custom Coupe. Sugar & Spice was built by Ron Grattan of North Royalton. Ohio beginning in 1987. He owned his own body and paint shop and did all of the conversion himself. The sled has been chopped four inches and he shaved all of the doors. deck and hood. Originally a four door. he reworked the body and installed doors from a two door. This modification gives the car a unique profile. The modified Chevy 350 engine and turbo tranny are mounted on a 1987 Camaro sub frame. The headlights and taillights are frenched along with the frenched and tunneled power antenna. The body has molded seams and taillights. The doors. the tinted windows. and the trunk are electric powered from a remote control.
Cosmetic changes include molded lake pipes and twin spotlights. The interior of wine mohair. includes the Cadillac tilt and telescoping steering wheel. power six way Cadillac front seat and barrel type Ford Thunderbird rear seats. The dash has been covered and all the new Stewart Warner gauges are mounted in a center floor console. This console also contains the Panasonic disk player and all the controls for the lights. This includes the under mounted purple neons and the neon lights in the trunk. There are also exterior speakers for the stereo. The interior upholstery contains five different patterns. The grill and radiator are from Chrysler products and the front park lights are stained glass. The trunk has been reworked and contains two air tanks and the compressor for the air ride system. The controls for this system are designed so each airbag is individually controlled. New air-conditioning and an auxiliary radiator fan have been installed. The vehicle has power steering. power brakes. two speed windshield wipers and blue dot taillights. The only chrome left are the original Mercury bumpers. The unique paint color is flamed lilac with two coats of red "flip flop" over it and a white mock Carson top.
The current owners purchased the Sugar and Spice in 2003. At that time she was a nice car but needed some basic changes to make her safer to drive and show.
Most of the changes. including installing the air ride system. and a total rewire job. were done by Mike and Ralph Scaplo of RKR in Pueblo. Colorado. They also redesigned the center console and installed the Stewart Warner gauges. and a new electric speedometer. There are two trunk mounted gel batteries that can be switched back and forth to make sure you always have power. A new set of Coker whitewalls finished her out.
When the current owners purchased this vehicle on 2003 it had only been shown once. It took first place at a national Mercury show for best paint scheme. Since then it has been shown extensively in Colorado and driven to a national Kustom Kemps show in Salina. Kansas. Between 2003 and 2008 this Mercury custom has won twenty six first place awards and four top twenty trophies. At the Salina Kansas show of 2004 this Mercury won "Most Outstanding Lead Sled" award over approximately 400 entries. The highlight was when the award was presented to the owner by George Barris who signed it.
The only trailer ride this vehicle ever took was the trip from Ohio to Colorado. She has been a joy to own and has created a stir wherever she has been driven. This Mercury is being offered for sale due to her current owners health problems. 7. 00 miles since restoration. original miles unknown.
